Windows 7 partition

    Question

  • Hi All,
I have Windows 7 Home Basic. My primary Disk space(C:) has 24GB and the next partition(G:) is a empty drive with 50GB.
Due to memory out of space issue in 'C' i need to combine C and G drives and the actual problem is options of 'Delete volume' and 'Expand volume' is disabled in both the drives.Only 'Shrink volume' is active in the drives.so i cannot expand the primary volume.Pls help me in solving out this issue.

    Thanks in Advance.

  • Hi,

Where is the space that you will extend with?  You need to shrink the G drive. However the space that is from the shrinking should be next to the C drive.

First please back up all data in partition G, then delete G and extend partition C, and recreate partition G with remained space.

Another method is to extend the system partition by using the command line.

  • You cannot expand the primary volume because there is no continuous unallocated space to C partition. Merge the two partition is very simple, some free partition manager does well. Aomei Partition Assistant Home Edition is one of the choice, refer to the article about merging partitions into one:

Yeah, this problem is strangely similar to mine. A couple of days ago, my C drive also had 5% of free space left and the E drive was almost empty. So, I also wondered to shrink some free space of E drive to my C drive. However, my “Extend Volume” was also unworkable in Disk Management.

So, I had to follow your answers and adopted some partition management utilities. In fact, after reading many related thread and articles, I just found a series of similar utilities:

    GParted

    http://gparted.sourceforge.net/

    IM-Magic Partition Resizer Free

    http://www.resize-c.com/

    EaseUS Partition Master

    http://download.cnet.com/EaseUS-Partition-Master-Free-Edition/3000-2248_4-10863346.html

After trying them all one by one, I just finally extended enough free space to my C drive successfully. Honestly, a guidance video that talks about how to resize a partition really helped me a lot:

Moreover, I also had learned to back up everything important before doing any changes to original data.
