Code 8024200D - Windows update encountered an unknown error

    Question

  • Windows Vista Ultimate is being run on a 64-bit Acer 9304WSMi.

Windows Update displays "Windows Vista Service Pack 1 for x64-based Systems (
KB936330)" as an "Important" update which has been selected for installation.

When the option to proceed has been selected the laptop display indicates "Downloading 1 update (0 KB total, 0% complete)" ....
and moves on to displaying "Creating a restore point"
before coming to rest displaying the message
    "Installing update 1 of 1...
Windows Vista Service Pack 1 for x64-based Systems (KB936330)"

A new window appears entitled "Install Windows Service Pack" containing the following text
"Welcome to Windows Vista Service Pack 1

    Service Pack 1
includes all previously released Windows Vista updates, enhances reliability and performance, and supports new types of hardware and standards."

The next screen invites the acceptance of the License terms upon which access is granted to a new window entitled "Install Windows Service Pack" containing the following text
"Install Windows Vista Service Pack 1

Save your work, close all open programs, and then click Install.

The installation might take an hour or more. You cannot use your computer during that time.

Your computer will restart several times during installation."

The "Install" button was pressed and the additional window closed resuming the view of
    the message
    "Installing update 1 of 1...
Windows Vista Service Pack 1 for x64-based Systems (KB936330)" but with the progress scroll bar active."

A new pane is opened by the resident firewall and anti-virus software bearing the message

"An application is trying to access the Internet
Application "Windows Modules Installer" is trying to estaclish TCP connection with remote IP address 131.107.44.1 : 80
Do you want to allow this communication?"

    An affirmative response is given.

The additionalal windows close and the Windows Update pane returns showing

    "Some updates were not installed.

    Failed: 1 update
    Error(s) found:
Code 8024200D  Windows Update encountered an unknown error."

    So what happens now?

  • Hi

    This error returns as:

    0x8024200D SUS_E_UH_NEED_ANOTHER_DOWNLOAD

The installer requires more data to be downloaded.

Open Windows Update and select 'Restore Hidden Updates' in the Tasks Pane. Look at all of those updates and install them. Even if it is an update for an installed component that you do not use.

One of the most common updates that was causing this problem was for the BitLocker file encryption component. Many users did not install this update, simply because they did not use the BitLocker component, but SP1 will not install without it.

I also recommend that you temporarily disable the firewall and antivirus software you are using. Despite the fact that you are approving the connection, the windows update component has already been disconnected and thus the error occurs.

    Let us know the result.

I followed this path and the list of Hidden Updates displays the message "You have not hidden any updates for your computer."

  • Same issue. Whilst trying to install: "Update for Windows Vista x64-based Systems (KB2522422) 613 KB" I encountered the error

    Some updates were not installed
    Failed: 1 update

    Error(s) found:

I also followed the instructions above and checked for hidden updates. I received the message "You have not hidden any updates for your computer.".
