error 1068 the dependency or group failed to start

    Question

  • How do I resolve the problem "error 1068 the dependency or group failed to start" ?

I am unable to start the following services on my computer:

    Computer Browser
    Netlogon
    Remote Procedure Call
    Workstation

I have not been able to find a resolution to this issue anywhere.

  • Hi, Go to start - run - services.msc  now check each of the items on your list and change values to Automatic. Slan go foill, Paul

  • see if you can get them started in a command window. go to start>run>cmd  then hit ok, when the command window comes up type in "sc query rpcss" without the qoutes, then enter, write down what it lists, then "sc query lanmanworkstation" then enter, an write that one down too. then "sc start rpcss" and enter, see what it says and write it down, then "sc start lanmanworkstation" and do the same with it, write down what it says. see if the Remote Procedure call and the Workstation services are started then. the other two depend on those so they should start if those are. but, if theres any problems re-post here what was in the command window for all those commands

  • There could be a GPO involved. has there been some change to the GPO just before the problem came up? if thats the case maybe the workstation just hasnt updated, then try "gpupdate / force" . if that isnt it you might want to check the registry and see whats listed in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\lanmanworkstation   see whats listed for startup and also look under "parameters" to make sure that a dependency DLL is there, and in lanmanworkstation make sure that the "ImagePath" is correct. also run "sc qc lanmanworkstation" and see what it gives you. see if the two imagepaths match

  • there is no GPO involved - this is a standalone workstation on a home network

I checked the values in the registry, compared them to the results of the "sc qc lanmanworkstation" command and another PC that is having no problems and they all match.

  • Are all of the machines using the same AV/Firewall ? have you checked to see if the AV is somehow blocking the workstation? What are you using for AV ?

  • the problem got to bugging me and I did some testing and research on it. if its still a problem, to start make sure that the DLL file is there that the workstation uses. thats  %systemroot%\system32\wkssvc.dll , if not, you might want to copy and paste it. If that isnt the case, try booting into safe mode and see if its a problem then, It could be that some driver that is loading is stopping that service driver, and, its easier to diagnose without everything else loaded too. if neither one of those help, try uninstalling then re-installing the service. in "Network connections" right click the connection thats applicable, and choose "Client for Microsoft Networks" then click uninstall then ok. then right click the connection again and this time choose "Install". I hope this helps to resolve everything
