RuntimeBroker.exe size blowing up (>1GB)

    Question

  • Hi!

Recently, I got a memory warning under Windows 8 on my 8 GB laptop. The culprit was RuntimeBroker.exe, which was >4GB in size. As to my understanding, RuntimeBroker.exe is a security process for Metro-based apps. I suppose that this is not intended behavior, and that this might be relevant for Windows security. Searching the net showed me that several people had the same symptoms, all running an app called "The Time". The bug can be easily reproduced by installing the current version of that app.

Will there be a fix from Microsoft?

  • create a full dump of the Exe and call the Microsoft support. This looks like a bug.

  • Yeah, this looks like a bug. But, I have not the time to go fix it with Microsoft. Either someone sees it here, or not.

In the mean time, I just regularly kill RuntimeBroker.exe.

  • Sorry, we have no crystal ball that can see why you have the high memory usage.

Capture the dump and send it the support.

  • 1. I think the steps are described reproducibly in my first mail. Install "The Time (V1.1.0.5)". Wait. See RuntimeBroker.exe get bigger and bigger.

    2. It's usually complicated to get the right person at support. If you get them, they want credit cards and tell you they will charge you if it's not a bug. I don't care enough to do that.

  • Thanks Andre, Leo.

@Andre: Tried your suggestion. Let's see.

@Leo: Connect does not seem to work for released products. That site says: "Having a problem with a released product? Go to http://support.microsoft.com" I don't find see way to report bugs for Windows 8 RTM there.

  • Hi, I also experience issue with the Runtime Broker memory consumption on several machines. I can (privately) provide you a link to a memory dump if requested. I've reached 3.4 GB even no metro app were launched for several minutes. Windows 8 x64 RTM

  • ok, the app "The Time" was updated. Install the Update in the Windows Store and see if this fixes it. This is a bug in the Windows Runtime and the developer was able to fix it:

untimebroker.exe taking a lot of memory
