  • Hi,

This occurs because of any recent codecs pack or video conversion software installed on the computer which changed the registry settings for shellEx for particular video file extension. Please try to take the following steps to troubleshoot this problem.

IMPORTANT: This method contains steps that tell you how to modify the registry. However, serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Therefore, make sure that you follow these steps carefully. For added protection, back up the registry before you modify it. Then, you can restore the registry if a problem occurs. Hi

I not sure what may has caused this behavior?

Try using System Restore to back to a time just prior to the first time you noticed this behavior.

    Hope this helps.

  • It worked!!!!!

    Thanks a lot.

I know the risks of manipulate the registry but I am a kind of kamikaze and edit the registry since W98.

    Thanks.

EDIT: Well it really "half worked". I don't know why, but some thumbnails still appears as icons (doesn't matter if it is an av, or a mpeg some shows the thumb and some the icon) and still have the error.

  • Hi DrGerry,

Thank you for your feedback, I am glad to hear we have made progress on the issue.

Given the current stage, could you please confirm the following points?

    1.       Which video type file still has the problem?

    2.       Did you install any third party codecs pack/video conversion software/media player software on the computer?

Some type files still have the problem can be caused by: (1) The fix steps above does not cover these video type. (2) A third party codecs pack/video conversion software/media player software in background keeps changing the registry settings.

    Thank you for your cooperation.

  • Hi. I really can't respond because every time I open the folder I receive the error message and the windows explorer restarts.

    About the point 1:

I can say this for sure: never with .flv files, which are showing only an icon.

I suppose sometimes the error is produced when explorer is "reading" (filling the above bar) and I try to open an image, or simply move the scrollbar (probably because explorer is trying to show a thumbnail). Sometimes, if I wait the process to end, it don't gives an error, but other times I get the error anyway.

I have opened folders with every kind of movies: .avi, .wvm, .mpg, .mpeg, .mov and everything is OK, but sometimes I can´t know what kind of files are inside one folder because it never ends to open.

Mostly, the .mpeg and .mpg files only shows an icon, and I think these are the file types that produces the error, but I cannot be sure about it.

    About the point 2:

Yes, I work with movies, so I installed Adobe Premiere, Adobe After Effects, QuickTime, and this programs installs codecs.

  • Hi DrGerry,

Regarding the .flv file problem, please add the following message into fix.reg which created previously.

    ----------------------------------------------------(Do not copy it)

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\. flv\ShellEx\{BB2E617C-0920-11d1-9A0B-00C04FC2D6C1}]

    @="{c5a40261-cd64-4ccf-84cb-c394da41d590}"

    ----------------------------------------------------(Do not copy it)

Then, please run the fix file again. Thank you for your cooperation.

Regarding the error message, could you please test it in Safe Mode? If the issue doesn’t occur in Safe Mode, I suggest you take a clean boot to narrow down the problem.

    Clean Boot

    ========

    1. Click Start, type "MSCONFIG" (without the quotations) in the Search Bar and Press "Enter" to start the System Configuration Utility.

Note: Please click Continue if the "User Account Control" window pops up.

    2. Click the "Services" tab, check the "Hide All Microsoft Services" box and click "Disable All" (if it is not gray).

    3. Click the "Startup" tab, click "Disable All" and click "OK".

    4. Restart the computer and test the issue.

Note: Clean Boot is a troubleshooting step. If some programs have been disabled, we can re-enable them later. If you see the System Configuration Utility, check the box of "Don't show this message" and then click "OK".

Please test this issue in the Clean Boot environment., if the issue disappears, we can use a 50/50 approach to quickly narrow down which entry is causing the issue.

    Hope it helps.

  • Thanks.

The line you wrote is the same last line in the other post. I have run the fix.reg again.

I have a folder which give error every time, so I use it for test. If I open it in Safe Mode, I don't get error, but the three .mpg/.mpeg files are show as icons.

I do the msconfig (I know it since W98) but I get the same error.

I think one or more of the .mpg files have codecs which produces the error. I have other .mpg or .mpeg in other folders and some shows the thumbnail and other don't.

    Thanks again.

  • Hi DrGerry,

I am glad to hear the issue doesn’t occurs in Safe Mode. Given the current situation, the issue mostly can be caused by a codec problem. Please take the following suggestion to troubleshoot the problem. Thanks.

    Reset Browser Helper Objects

    =====================================================

    1. Click Start , type regedit in the Search box, and then press ENTER.

    2. Locate and then click the following registry subkey:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\explorer\Browser Helper Objects\

    2. In the navigation pane, right-click Browser Helper Objects, click Export, Save a backup file on your desktop.

NOTE: If an unexpected issue be encountered after modifying registry, please double click the backup file to restore registry.

    3. In the navigation pane, right-click any subkey under Browser Helper Objects, click New, and then click Dword (32 bit) value.

    4. Change the value name to NoExplorer , and then set the value to 1 .

    5. Repeat steps 3-4 for the all the subkeys

    6. Close Registry Editor, and then restart the computer to test the issue again.

If the issue still persist, I suggest you run Process Explorer to collect information.

    1. Click the link below.

    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896653.aspx

    2. Click “Download Process Explorer (1.6 MB)” at the bottom of the window, please download and save it onto the Desktop..

    3. Right click and extract “ProcessExplorer.zip” to the Desktop.

    4. Open the extracted folder of “ProcessExplorer”, double click “procexp.exe”.

    5. Click Agree to open it.

    6. Click View on the Tool menu, and select “Show Lower Pane”.

    7. Click View on the Tool menu, click “Lowe Pane View”, and select “DLLs”.

    8. Then click “+” before “explorer.exe” in the left pane.

    9. Then, click File on the Tool menu, save process explorer data on your desktop as a TXT file.

    10. Please post the TXT file contents on the forum.

    Thanks.

  • I formatted and reinstalled W7, but I have the same problem. I edited the keys on registry. I have some subkeys (7 I believe) but only two haven't the NoExplorer dword value (I put all on 1)

However I still have the same trouble.

  • Hi,

Could you please check DockShellHook.dll on your side?

    Thanks.
    Wednesday, April 15, 2009 10:27 AM
  • Check? I'm sorry I don't understand what I must do.

I find a DockShellHook.dll. This is a file from ObjectDock, a bar like Mac OS with links: http://www.stardock.com/products/objectdock/index.asp

I have closed this bar and verified that DockShellHook.dll is not active and I have the same error again.

  • I applied a trick that give me an user, related to another question: I cusomise the folder as Pictures and It gives me no error.

    I'm confused but happy :D
    Wednesday, April 15, 2009 4:35 PM
  • I don't know what happened with my last post.

What I said is: the error still is there.

I'm desperate. I need to work, but I can't open a folder with movies. If there is a mpeg I get an error.
    Saturday, April 18, 2009 5:25 AM
  • I have the opposite problem: I DON'T want to see thumbnails of movies, but I do want to see thumbnails for pictures.  Is there a way to suppress thumbnails for specific types?  thanks
    Sunday, April 19, 2009 1:52 PM
  • Well, this is another option I could want ;)

My problem appears to be with the mpeg files, but I need to use the PC to work with movies, mpg included. I installed the k-lite codecs but the problem still is there. On Xp I don't have this trouble.
    Sunday, April 19, 2009 8:02 PM
  • hmm I have K-Lite Mega Codecs Pack installed and I have thumbnails and no problems whatsoever.
    Sunday, April 19, 2009 9:53 PM
  • More confusion then. My problem clearly is with the mpeg (or mpg) files.

So the only solution is mantain a XP partition to work with movies? It is absurd.

  • Same problem here DrGerry,
After install ACDSEE all my media thummbnail gone. Hope there a way to bring it back without using regedit
    Tuesday, April 21, 2009 6:30 AM
  • Please! I need help with this. I can't open a movie file, and it's not fun, it is about my work.

I can't open the folder from no program (obviously every program uses the explorer to open files). I can't even move or delete the suspicious files from the folder (the mpg still are the prime suspects but not the proved guilties).

Right now I have the error opennig a folder with movies and images, but still not showing mpg files. Explorer shows the thumnails of the first folders and files (avi), the jpg and suddently, error... still showing jpg files.

I don't know what to do. I'm desperate.

EDITED: I booted on XP, moved the MPG and MPEG files to other folder and now when I open the folder without mpgs I don't get the error. The question is: what must I do with this files? cannot open in W7?

  • Hi DrGerry,

I do hope someone helps you because I have the same issue.

Thumbnails for .MPG and .MP4 files do not show.

.AVI and .WMV files show up fine.

With .MOV, I'd say that 50% just show the generic quicktime icon thumbnail and 50% display a proper thumbnail preview.
    Monday, September 07, 2009 10:41 AM
  • You can try to reasign the default program that opens an .mpg file and sometimes the thumbnail will be restored. Then reasign it to the original program and the thumbnail should still be present and restored.

@Mr Seven: When I had the problem this solution didn't worked :(

  • Hi, I have the same problem with no thumbnails but only with .AVI files from my security camera SD card. Never been a problem with Vista, always populates the screen with thumbnails when I view the SD card. I have tried your regedit program but that doesn't work and I have no third party codecs installed. This problem is putting me off buying windows 7 as I need this thumbnail facility in operation. Can you help please?

  • i am having the same proublem but "simply go to run command (start > run) and type
REGSVR32 SHMEDIA.DLL" does not work in WINDOWS 7.  is there a new way to type it in win7 ? if i use a program to open a file they show up like that. like when u use media player classic.... open file ... then in the box that you find which file you want to open it genarate the thombnail and when i go that that folder in explorer the thumbnails are still there. but i i just click on thumbnail view in folder explorer, only (.mpeg) and (.mpg) makes thumbnails.... .avi .wmv .asf . . . and so on dont

     why is this ?

  • I was having the same problem after installing the newest win7codec pack.  I uninstalled it and installed k-lite codec pack and after installing k-lite it pops up and asks which files you want to have thumbnails of, avi, flv, mpg ect ect ect... I checked them all and fixed the problem.  Install k-lite codec pack!
    Tuesday, February 23, 2010 3:47 AM
  • I have tried what you suggested but that didn't work. Is there something you have to do with K-lite to get it to produce thumbnails with my camera SD card or once you have installed it does it work automatically. I need the camera SD card screen to populate and change my .AVI files to thumbnails as I view each folder. Maybe I am not doing something in K-Lite properly.

  • Only other thing i can think of is.. have you used any registry cleaners lately?  I noticed after I used a registry cleaner that's when all of my problems started and i rolled back to a previous state in my registry cleaner.  I'm using K-Lite_Codec_Pack_570_Full.  Right after i installed it a menu pops up asking which files you want to show thumbnails of. I checked them all and it fixed my problem of having blank thumbnails.   I hope that helps you fix your problem.

  • Can you believe you have to do all this garbage just to get the freakin thumbnail view to work like it did with windows XP and Vista...

    What a bunch of s..t

Microcrap advertises that they made "windows 7 simpler".........yeah what a crock

I'd just like the g....d...m thing to work without doing all this garbage. Obviously too much to ask.

For me, Windows 8 will be APPLE!

    Monday, June 14, 2010 11:47 PM
  • Something to check: Even if you never use Windows Media Player, it still needs to be turned on in Windows if you want to display FLV thumbnails. Windows 7 uses Windows Media Player 12 to generate thumbnails for non-native formats. Go to Control Panel - Programs and Features - Turn Windows features on or off - find WMP 12 and make sure it is on. If you have a 64-bit version of Windows, now go into K-lite or Shark (either one, doesn't matter which one) and set ffdshow as the preferred 64-bit decoder for H.264, because the 64-bit versions of Windows use the 64-bit decoder to display thumbnails. You may need to run K-lite or Shark as admin (Right-click + Run as Administrator).

  • This registry fix worked for me, as I was having the same issue on a clean install of Win7 Ultimate, after installing Itunes. This should be made into a KB article

  • hey Robinson Zhang I am having problems with my windows 7 video library too it is missing thumbnails for videos .

but the rest; type of file:  MP4 Video (.mp4), QuickTime Movie (.MOV) wont show any thumbnails even I have them as Opens with: Windows Media Player!
