Remote Procedure Call Failed - Windows 8

    Question

  • PLEASE HELP!!!

    I keep getting an error message 'Remote Procedure Call Failed' in Windows 8 when I try and open certain apps (photos, video's, Skype, mail, messaging, etc).

    I have been through several forums and gone through recommended steps prior to posting this here.  These include:

    * changing my account to a windows account

    * updating windows and apps and synching apps

    * uninstalling AV

    * disabled Windows Firewall

    * Ran the windows app troubleshooter

    * Updated ALL drivers - including graphics card

    I'm so lost without being able to use my apps.  PLEASE PLEASE help me!

    Thanks so much :-)

  • Hi,

    The issue is mostly caused by incorrect or missing registry. Please ensure you have the following registry first.

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\LocalSettings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\AppContainer\Storage\winstore_cw5n1h2txyewy

    After checking that, please download SetACL.exe from http://helgeklein.com/download/. Extract the zip SetACL.exe to C:\Windows\System32 folder. Then set the permissions using the following command:

    SetACL -on "hkcu\Software\Classes\Local Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\AppContainer\Storage\winstore_cw5n1h2txyewy" -ot reg -actn ace -ace "n: S-1-15-2-2608634532-1453884237-1118350049-1925931850-670756941-1603938316-3764965493;p:full;i:so,sc;m:grant;w:dacl"

  • http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Remote_procedure_call Maybe you can try to stop/start the RPC service on Win 8. It may buy you something, although that should have happened when the machine was booted. Did you do a sfc /scannow at the command prompt to check for system corruption?
