Windows Activation Error 0XC004C020

    Question

  • I am having an issue Activating my copy of Win7 to a computer, I re-installed Windows on this computer 3 times in the last year, no-one else has access to this key and it has only been used on that computer, I tried to use the Automative Phone Service but i cant seem to find it, when i go to computer properties and click activate there is only 2 options, activate online now and ask me later, if i do the activate now i get the error code 0XC004C020 which says it has been activated on multiple computers, but it then gives me the option to contact microsoft by phone to help solve this problem but it takes me to windows help and support, and does not give a phone number of which to call in any of the links. Please help.

  • Hi,

This error means that the activation server reported that the key has exceeded its limit.

To activate by phone, follow this procedure below

    1. Open Windows Activation by clicking the Start button Picture of the Start button, right-clicking Computer, clicking Properties, and then clicking Activate Windows now.

    2. Click Show me other ways to activate.

    3. Type your Windows 7 product key, and then click Next.

    4. Click Use the automated phone system. Administrator permission required If you're prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

    5. Click the location nearest you from the drop-down list, and then click Next.

    6. Call one of the available phone numbers listed. An automated system will guide you through the activation process.

    7. When prompted, enter the installation ID that's listed on your screen into your phone's keypad.

    8. Write down the confirmation ID that the phone system gives you.

    9. Type the confirmation ID into the space provided under Step 3 in the activation dialog, click Next, and then follow the instructions.

To properly analyse and solve problems with Activation and Validation, we need to see a full copy of the report produced by the MGADiag tool (download and save to desktop - http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012 )
    Once saved, run the tool.
Click on the Continue button, which will produce the report.
To copy the report to your response, click on the Copy button in the tool (ignore any error messages at this point), and then paste (using either r-click/Paste, or Ctrl+V ) into your response.
     - IN YOUR OWN THREAD, please

  • WHat error message do you get when attempting to activate?

If it's 0XC004C020 then the MAK license has reached its activation limit, and you need to speak to your SysAdmin.

This is a volume License Key - if you purchased it retail, you were sold a counterfeit.

  • Hello,

I am having the same problem. Yannick Plavonil's solution does not work. When I attempt it, I receive the following dialogue box:

I obtained my copy of Windows 7 Professional from the MSDNAA website. It's a site that Microsoft offers to IT students. My school was San Jacinto Community College. I know why I receive the error code. As a IT guru, I have re-formatted my PC's hard drive numerous times since I initially installed the Windows 7 Professional OS. But, last time I received the code, I didn't get this dialogue box. I was taken to the phone number to call. No dice this time. I'm not getting a phone number to call. What do I do?

Here are the results of the MGADiag Tool:

  • The only thing you can do is contact the System Admin at the college and see if they will increase the number of activations available on the Key - chances are that they won't though, if you're no longer a student there. (which means that you'll have to buy a Retail license)
