The requested operation requires elevation

    Question

  • Whenever I try to release or renew and IP address, or flush the dns, etc. from the command prompt, this error appears "The requested operation requires elevation".  What does this mean?  It sounds like I need and do not have administrative privaleges but I am in fact an administrator on my machine.  Any answers or suggestions are greatly appreciated.

  • To get around this in Vista... You have to start the command prompt in Administrator Mode... which can be achieved by going to Start->All Programs->Accessories. You will have to right click on the Command Prompt item to reveal the option to run Run it as Administrator.

    Hope this help!

  • This was helpful, but does anyone know why you need to run it that way when we have administrative rights both local and domain wide?

  • This is one of security features to secure Vista, although it's annoying sometimes.. If you really don't like it, you can disable this requires elevation feature
