Windows 7 Prof 32 bit -v- 64bit and XP Mode

    Question

  • Good day

When I bought my retail Windows 7 Prof it came with 2 DVD's. One 32 bit. One 64 bit. I installed the 64 bit and found I could not run 16 DOS apps. so wiped and installed 32 bit - runs 16 bit app fine - no  need for any Virtual PC.

I'm now ordering a new DELL laptop and have been offered 'Windows 7 Professional XP Mode 32 bit' Is this the same as Windows 7 Prof 32 bit? It seems I need to download XP Mode which looks like a virtual machine app.

    Can some clarify pls

    Nigel

That's actually not enough information. My *guess* is that it's 32-bit
Windows 7 Professional, but to make sure, ask Dell.

  • I think the 32Bit belongs to the XP (mode). But Bob is right. Contact Dell before buying it.

And you can sue DOSBox to run DOS applications under a x64 Windows.

  • When you order the new Dell, you can get it with or without XP Mode preinstalled.  That is what your option is: Windows 7 Pro plus XP Mode is preinstalled.  If you order just Windows 7 Pro, XP Mode is not installed, if you want it you would have to manually download and install it.

Both versions you list are 32bit Windows 7 options. Otherwise, it would say Windows 7 Professional, 64-bit, for the 64bit version.

WHen you buy a Windows license from Dell, you're getting an OEM, not a retail version.  You need to pick 32 or 64bit as only one will be installed, and you will only get recovery media for the version you choose.
