Windows 7 Remote Desktop Service broken

    Question

  • I used to connect to my Windows 7 Professional 64-Bit system via remote desktop from other systems, usually Windows XP with updated remote desktop client.

Since some days, this does not work anymore.

After hitting 'connect' in the mstsc client, for a short time the window "configuring connection" appears. After that, nothing more happens. No error message, i can start over.
When i activate the option "certificate warning", after hitting 'connect' i get the warning and can see the certificate of my Windows 7 System.

I looked into Eventlog on client and on the server: nothing.

I used different client systems, always the same problem.

    But:
Sometimes it works: every 30th or 50th try, rdp connection works: i get the login window and everything is ok.

There have been changes on the Windows 7 system, i regular install all updates.

Can i trace or debug the problem?

What could have happened to the Windows 7 system?

    Tnx for any help,
    Joachim

I want to tracing tool particualar to RDC in win64bit.

  • Hi,

Try to follow this article to troubleshoot the remote desktop connection issue:

    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Why-can-t-I-connect-using-Remote-Desktop-Connection

If it doesn’t help, you can also perform a system restore for test.

  • Hi,

    tnx for reply.

I followed the steps in the article mentioned.

Most steps are useless for me because

    • connection is sometimes working
    • no error message
    • connection is always working until certificate check, but login window usually does not appear

Cant do a system restore because i would loose other changes. System is used for production, everything else works.

    Questions still open:

    1. Can i trace or debug the problem?
    2. What could have happened to the Windows 7 system?

    Greetings,

    Joachim

  • Hi,

The issue might be caused by the incorrect certificate or credential in your machine.

You can try to delete the certificate by this method:

    http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms788967.aspx

Or delete the credential on Windows7 control panel\credential manager

  • Solution to your problem was offered in this thread

    Hi,

i do not understand your answer.

The mentioned thread deals about File Access from Windows 7 PC to Shares/Files residing on an XP PC. This is not my problem. Access to Shares is working in my configuration.

    Problem is:

    • remote desktop connection (rdp) to Windows 7 System does not work
    • not error message when trying to connect
    • somestimes (you have to hit den Connect Buttom about 30-50 times) it is working

    Hi,

    tnx for your answer.

On which system should i delete the certificate:

    - on the server or on the client?

How do i identifiy the certificate which should be deleted?

  • We have the same issue. The Windows 7 systems works fine generally, but unable to connect to it from a remote computer. The error that we encounter is that the remote system cannot be found or the remote services are not enabled.

A workaround that we have found is to restart the "Remote Desktop Services" service and the computer can be accessed till its next reboot. Post reboot, we cannot connect to it again remotely unless the service is restarted again.

    Any clues?

    Thanks

  • After several Windows Updates and some months later the problem disappeared.
