Cannot activate my Windows 7 Home Premium System Builder / OEM edition

    Question

  • I built a new gaming PC (my first one).  To save a bit of money, I purchased the OEM / System Builder version of Win7, assuming that as I was building my own system this would be valid.  Everything works - except my product key.  It was rejected and is still rejected.  Any reason why this is the case?  I've read something about special tools that system builders need to use but I couldn't find more information on this.  Any help is appreciated...

  • Have you called Microsoft to get it activated over the phone?

  • To properly analyse and solve problems with Activation and Validation, we need to see a full copy of the report produced by the MGADiag tool
(download and save to desktop - http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012 )
     Once saved, run the tool.
Click on the Continue button, which will produce the report.
To copy the report to your response, click on the Copy button in the tool (ignore any error messages at this point), and then paste (using either r-click/Paste, or Ctrl+V ) into your response.
      - **in your own thread**, please

Please also state the Version and Edition of Windows quoted on your COA sticker (if you have one) on the case of your machine (or inside the battery compartment), but do NOT quote the Key on the sticker!

A "sysetm builder" copy is supposed to be used for a system intended for resale only. If you keep it, you'd be in technical violation of the license agreement. (Like nearly everyone who has purchased a system builder copy, I imagine.)

The Windows OPK is supposed to be used in the installation of a system builder copy, but that's mainly so that the PC's purchaser is given the opportunity to accept (or reject) the terms of the Windows license, even though WIndows is already installed and (I'm not sure about this) activated.

It is not necessary to use the OPK to install and activate a system builder copy.

This doesn't resolve your problem, but it tells you where not to look.

  • Thanks - here's the report.

The last bits of the product key are totally different from what came with the software.

  • The installed Key is the Default Key - usually this is caused by not entering the proper Key during installation.

You need to change teh Key to the one that came with the package, using the link at the bottom of the System properties page.

You may need to activate by phone.
