cursor skips around while typing

    Question

  • While I'm typing, suddenly the cursor skips to the top of the screen and all typing stops. Is this a Windows 7 problem?

    Hi Leighton

Check the Options for the Touchpad. You may be inadvertantly pressing a key combination that is designed to use the mouse with the keys on keyboard.

If you cannot find anything, I would suggest asking this question on the Dell Support Forums. There may be a known issue with this behavior.

  • Hi leighton33,

    Add to the above suggestions:

Generally, cursor skip issue can be caused by the factors including third party software, device driver, touchpad settings, virus or spyware infection.

Please see if the following suggestions can resolve the issue:

    -           If the issue occurred after installing certain software or hardware, please remove it to check the result. Or, you can perform System Restore to restore to the date before the issue first occurred.

    -           Scan your system using anti-spyware and anti-virus software to confirm the system is clean.

    -           Check the touchpad's sensitivity if it is available. You can simply disable the touchpad to test the result. You shall contact the device manufacturer directly to confirm the settings.

    -           Use a mouse pad for better mouse performance.

    -           Update the mouse driver to the latest one which is compatible with Windows 7.

    Hope this helps.

    Regards,

    Linda

  • No, its either a mouse driver problem or you could have remote control software on your machine and someone (IT staff possibly) had remoted in and then logged out. But I'm willing to bet its a mouse driver issue. What machine do you have and what mouse do you have attached (and is it wireless)

  • I also have had this problem... on TWO laptops.  I think the second one, which I just purchased a few days ago, may have recieved the problem in transferring my files using a transfer program.

I have repeatedly scaned for viruses.  It started shortly after Vista was removed from my old laptop and XP was installed.  Now my new computer has Windows 7 and the problem persists. The problem must have been transferred along with my files or drivers. It is driving me banannas!!!  PLEASE... does anyone know what I can do??

I read something about it may be from a generic driver and the need to reinstall the manufacture's touch pad driver.  It is not a touch pad  or mouse issue, for it happens when I plug in my keyboard and type with that.

Has anyone found a solution?  Can anyone help?  Please???

    Thanks, Sarah

  • Hi Sarah,

Please try the suggestions in my previous post. Also, make sure that none of your keys are getting stuck when you type. You can also test if the issue occurs with other keyboards.

  • I have same problem...

i tried ur suggestion. didn't work.

after typing a certain set of letters, Windows seems to want to help to suggest words. if I type very slow, this won't happen. But if I type at more than 20 wpm, it has a tendency to move the cursor to some other place on the page.
