Windows 7 Upgrade froze at 'gathering files, settings and programs (40%)...'

    Question

  • I downloaded Windows 7 upgrade for Vista, and left it running overnight. For 15 hours now it has stuck on this :

Does anybody have any ideas of how to solve it?

Perhaps I can follow the instructions for the 'Froze at 62%' thread?

Any help would be appreciated. Not extremely computer literate so as simple an answer as you could would be greatly appreciated!

  • Hi,

Before update to Windows 7, I suggest to  use Windows 7 upgrade advisor first, it will It scans your PC for potential issues with your hardware, devices, and installed programs, and recommends what to do before you upgrade:

    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/downloads/upgrade-advisor

Then login with Clean Boot  then start the updated. Also temporally disable firewall, remove antivirus program.

    Hope that helps.
