Failed to install the Windows Virtual PC Update (Windows6.1-KB958559-x86.msu)

  • RonChohamin,
It looks like you tried to install Windows VPC on either Windows 7 Starter, or on a pre-RTM build of Win7 (probably RC). Windows Virtual PC will not install on pre-RTM builds of Windows. To read the full support statement, please take a look at:

    Thomas,
Did you convert the Users directory to a junction point to redirect it to another volume? If so, you may want to take a look at http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/949977 to perform the redirection in a supported way.

  • Thomas,
Are you sure the PC has Virtualization enabled in the BIOS?

Have you downloaded the current XP-Mode and current Virtual PC install?
If so, does the current XP-Mode VHD get installed OK? (a folder under Programs and appears in Control Panel-Programs?

If so, the error I get from the current Virtual PC install is that "the Update is not appropriate for the computer".

Microsoft advanced technical support blamed the RC of Ultimate as the problem and seized troubleshooting, stating that the Virtual PC download for the RC was removed when the RTM was released.

(BTW - do you happen to have the "old" Virtual PC download (~8.6MB) for the RC trial period? I'd try it on my RC if I could find it?)

You may want to contact Microsoft @ 1-800-936-5700 Microsoft advanced technical support and have them pick it up from there?

I tried to add to the thread but could not get logged on again? Sorry.

    Thank you.

    With Best Regards,

  • I have encountered the same problem, recurring after 3 separate downlaods and attempts to install, the Virtual PC install fails with the error that "The update is not applicable to this computer".  The Virtual PC never shows up on START Menu.

I have an open ticket with Microsoft (India) Tech Support and they promise to have a "senior tech" call me Thursday AM to resolve.

My impression is that Virtual PC for Win7 is still "beta"?
Please stand by for any news.

PS if you watch the video for Installing XP mode she says do V-PC first, then XP mode?  That failed too.
