ping fails intermittently but nslookup is fine

    General discussion

  • Hi,

I activated DNS and AD Roles in Windows 2008 r2. I have Windows 7 and Windows 8 machines in LAN and both of them having intermittent failures to resolve the hosts using FQDN, Hosts in LAN can be reached using IP address and NSLOOKUP works fine too .. it is just the PING using a FQDN doesn't resolve. Appreciate any help with this issue.

I disabled IPv6 on local machine using the KB Article http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929852

Here is "ipconfig /all" shows for Ethernet connection .. (I unchecked IPv6 on the local PC under Control Panel -> Networks -> Ethernet properties)

    DHCP Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : Yes
    Autoconfiguration Enabled . . . . : Yes
    IPv4 Address. . . . . . . . . . . : 10.0.10.199(Preferred)
    Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
    Lease Obtained. . . . . . . . . . : 15 January 2013 14:56:57
    Lease Expires . . . . . . . . . . : 03 February 2013 17:26:18
    Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 10.0.10.1
    DHCP Server . . . . . . . . . . . : 10.0.10.1
    DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : 10.0.10.50
                                        10.0.10.1

    NetBIOS over Tcpip. . . . . . . . : Enabled

BTW, workaround using so far is, to run ipconfig /renew couple of times, ipconfig /flusdns (sometimes) and then ping with FQDN works fine again.

    Thanks
    Kishore
