Back up Error: error code 0x81000019 + hidden partition

    Question

  • Hey everyone,

I am just trying out Windows 7 and so far smooth sailing except this issue.  Just ran into it today and did a few research from various sites searched through google.com.  I found many people having the same issue (same error code and similar VSS & SPP issue), but no one seems to have had a resolution.  I also did minor search on this community and did not come up with any definitive answer.

    Action:
Backing up certain folders and files to an external USB drive.  Files and folders total to be around 10GB, destination is 160GB.

    Problem:
Whenever action is performed, an error pops up stating that "Shadow copy could not be created, check VSS & SPP.  The writer experienced a non-transient error and would likely happen again if the above action is performed again."

    Event Viewer:

    -----------------------VSS--------------------------------------

To my knowledge, some people have stated that the 100MB drive that was used to hold the NTLoader has something to do with this.  I have no clue what to do to make it work, please advise.

  • This error may be caused by the system image backup configuration incorrect on the computer or some related components or services corrupt on the computer, you can follow the below steps to solve this issue:

    1. Run “vssadmin list writers” to check if there is any error.

    2. Register related dll files (we can ignore error messages if there is any)

    cd /d %windir%\system32

    Net stop vss

    Net stop swprv

    regsvr32 ole32.dll

    regsvr32 vss_ps.dll

    regsvr32 es.dll

    regsvr32 stdprov.dll

    regsvr32 msxml3.dll

    regsvr32 msxml.dll

    regsvr32 msxml4.dll

    3. Stop related services

    a) Volume Shadow Copy Service.

    b) Microsoft Software Shadow Copy Provider.

    c) COM+ event system

    d) COM+ System Application

    4. Under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \Software\Microsoft\EventSystem\{26c409cc-ae86-11d1-b616-00805fc79216}\Subscript, delete the "Subscriptions" key and leave the EventClasses key

    5. Under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\VolSnap add MinDiffAreaFileSize (DWORD) and set the value to 3000

    6. Restart above services

    7. Restart the computer

And then, please run the Backup and Restore Utility again by following the below configuration:

    Click Start->Control Panel->Backup and Restore->Change Settings

Choose the Backup Destination on your local hard drive, not on an external USB drive

    Choose Let me Choose option

Choose which files you want to backup and uncheck the checkbox “Include a system image of drives: OS (C:)” in the bottom of the window

    And then run the backup

If the problem exists, please locate C:\Windows\Logs\WindowsBackup. There is a log named "Backup Files*_error.log" will be created when starting backup. We can check the detail error about the backup errors.

  • Thanks for the reply Betty!

I ran into a couple of errors while registering the dll files.

regsvr32 es.dll  - Was loaded; however, the entry point DllRegisterServer was not found.

    regsvr32 msxml.dll

    regsvr32 msxml4.dll

These two other dll files were not found.

What should be my next move  ?

  • You can find the msxml.dll and msxml4.dll from C:\WINDOWS\system32 in other running fine Windows 7 computer, and then copy them into your own computer in the same folder. And then test this issue again. If this issue still exists, you can follow the rest steps to test this issue.

  • Hey,

I have this same problem, again ...
While installing all my sw and files again on Windows 7, I could make backups and system images several times without any problem.
mid last week, this stopped giving me this error.
Yesterday, I did all things mentioned here.
so i was able to find the Subscriptions key and delete it.
Afterwards, I was able to backup to my hard disk (as a first test), to a USB disk (second test) and finally to my network share.
being quite happy, I defined my backup parameters and schedule (Sunday morning 2:0am).

This morning, I noticed that i got again this error.
I checked again the Subscriptions key but that key is not in the registry now.
I added the other registry parameter (is 3000 the hex or decimal value?), no difference.
And , I get the error no matter what backup device I use.

I get (but also got yesterday) the same errors as above when registering the dll's. I do not have another Windows 7  system around (and no PC to install it for now, and Virtual PC is not compatible with 64bit), can I do an in-place upgrade? Or, can I copy the files from a Windows 7 32bit system that I install on a Virtual PC?

  • anybody some more news on this issue?
    Thursday, September 17, 2009 7:54 PM
  • It might be time consuming and I havn't tested this yet but try to make the backup to another location, somwhere on the hard drive. When it completes transfer it to your USB drive. The registry workarounds are a bit involved so if this is a bug chances are it will be resolved in the future and we may have to wait for Hotfix - patch.

  • thank you for your reply.

i have tried to make a backup to the hard disk, but I get the same error.
i have also tried to create a system image on a hard disk, same error.

  • Hey

I have just re-installed Windows 7 hoping to get rid of this problem.
The only sw installed now is Windows 7 and all needed and optional updates.

Different from last installation is that now I was not able to even once make a system image, or a backup.
I have immediately the same problems now, really exactly:

    the regsvr32 errors as described
the registry key Subscriptions is not there

So, I presume that I have to give up, most probably one of the updates is causing this trouble.

so, i will have to wait on a bug correction.

I hope that this comes fast, I was planning to use the backup sw (i was using Onecare backups before, worked very fine and automatically)

  • I gave up on this problem about a week after I posted this.  I couldn't find a solution to it.  I use Acronis TrueImage to back up things now.  In any case, on my other machines to prevent this issue, I sized, partitioned, and format what I needed before installing win7.   This seemed to alleviate the issue because bitlocker partition was not installed.  Windows always seem to have something broken.
    Monday, October 26, 2009 11:36 AM
  • I also have this problem on Win7 Ultimate x64. The daily automatic backup to a network drive worked for 1 week, then it started to give this error:

Backup did not complete successfully because a shadow copy could not be created. Free up disk space on the drive that you are backing up by deleting unnecessary files and then try again.

I increased the space allocated to system restore from 2% (the default) to 100%, I am able to create restore points manually, but the backup still fails.

I also found this in the VSS event log:

The VSS service is shutting down due to idle timeout.

    Please fix this.

  • Same thing happened to me: I wasn't able to make backups, I followed the directions above, I was able to make 2 backups, now I get the error again, and the directions above don't help. Any news?

  • My backup problem is finally solved.

    But, quite weird:

    ·         I did not feel like completely re-installing

    ·         So, I first tried

    o   Boot gparted (partition editor)

    o   Delete system reserved partition

o   Tried to boot, not working

o   Boot system repair to add new partition

    o   Booted ok

o   Same problem with backup (access denied)

    ·         Like I saw the format option in gparted, wanted to do a last try:

o   Boot gparted, and format partition

o   Tried to boot, not working

o   Boot system repair to repair partition

    o   Boot Windows 7 ok

o   Backup and creation of system image works ok

Did all that 10 days ago, made 3 backups in the meantime, no problem anymore

  • Hi all,

    Regret the inconvenience.
We have found that the system reserved partition is becoming full some times and the error listed above is the reason for the same. Some application is turning on the USN journal on the reserved partition(we are still investigating the root cause) which is causing the backup failure. The workaround for the problem is to increase the reserved partition size to 500 MB. If you are using any file related software, which can suspicious of this, please reply to this thread and help us in investigation.

    Thanks,
    S.Soudamini.

  • This error may be caused by the system image backup configuration incorrect on the computer or some related components or services corrupt on the computer, you can follow the below steps to solve this issue:

    1. Run “vssadmin list writers” to check if there is any error.

    2. Register related dll files (we can ignore error messages if there is any)

    cd /d %windir%\system32

    Net stop vss

    Net stop swprv

    regsvr32 ole32.dll

    regsvr32 vss_ps.dll

    regsvr32 es.dll

    regsvr32 stdprov.dll

    regsvr32 msxml3.dll

    regsvr32 msxml.dll

    regsvr32 msxml4.dll

    3. Stop related services

    a) Volume Shadow Copy Service.

    b) Microsoft Software Shadow Copy Provider.

    c) COM+ event system

    d) COM+ System Application

    4. Under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \Software\Microsoft\EventSystem\{26c409cc-ae86-11d1-b616-00805fc79216}\Subscript, delete the "Subscriptions" key and leave the EventClasses key

    5. Under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\VolSnap add MinDiffAreaFileSize (DWORD) and set the value to 3000

    6. Restart above services

    7. Restart the computer

And then, please run the Backup and Restore Utility again by following the below configuration:

    Click Start->Control Panel->Backup and Restore->Change Settings

I have a similar backup problem.  I followed your instructions.  The Backup...log file was empty.
    Any other ideas?

    Thanks, Soudamini

In the link you provided is a post by Sneha dated 11/4/09.  It solved my backup problem.
There is one typo error in it though.
The commend should read: bcdboot c:\windows /s f:

I tried it their way, and got a notice saying dummy the syntex is wrong.  Do it this way.  Other than that, making a new bigger System Restore partition did the job.  I do know if the original partition was bad or just to small and right know I do not care.  Since my C: drive had enough room, I shrank it 490M and make a new 490M partition.  That is obviously larger then necessary, but I didn't want to have to keep enlarging it until the backup worked.  The created partition is now large enough to be able to comply with the space requirements set up for the backup function.

    Thanks again.

  • I've had similar issue with Win7 backup and your steps solved it. Even without restart :-).

Only question is why is MS software giving such misleading error messages (not enough space :-O)?

    Anyway, thank you, Betty He.

  • OK Betty He's steps solved the issue and I was able to run the backup. But only ONCE, then the issue reappeared and Betty He's steps no longer help me.

Any other idea what can I do? Please.

How do you increase the size of the reserved system partition  please  ?

Why would you want to? - it's there for a specific purpose, and should not be used for anything else.
