"This computer is not running genuine windows"

    General discussion

  • The last 2 days a window has been popping suddenly on my computer telling me that my Windows is not genuine. After researching in several forums I could gather
that this problem has something to do with Update kb971033, which I installed. I know my copy of Windows 7 Ultimate is genuine: I bought it at Amazon.com.
From what I understand the above mentioned update is geared toward confirm or ascertain that the software the computer  is running is authentic.("Windows Activation Technologies helps you confirm that the copy of Windows 7 that is running on your computer is genuine. Additionally, Windows Activation Technologies helps protect against the risks of counterfeit software. Windows Activation Technologies in Windows 7 consists of activation and validation components that contain anti-piracy features").
My computer is current on updates, I know I have genuine Windows 7 installed, my Windows 7 software is activated with the key product number that appears on the inside of the case the dvds came in, so what's going on? Though the window with such message keeps popping on my screen I haven't noticed any problems with my normal usage of my computer so far. How can I get rid of this nuisance?

                                 Thanks

  • Try this forum: http://social.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/genuinewindows7/threads. You should prepare a diagnostic report with MGADiag.exe (downloadable from MS - run it, press button "paste" and copy the content to an empty *.txt file).

  • I think you have something regarding Update kb971033.  That is the only update on the list that has no publisher listed, that field is blank.

All the others have "Microsoft Corporation" in that field.  Could be a glitch of some kind with this update.

As it is, I uninstalled this update on both desktop & laptop.

I'm running legitimate purchased copies of Win7 on both and am not going to deal with this nonsense.

You said you uninstalled kb971033, so did the window stop popping on your screen?
If the answer is yes, what steps you followed to uninstall kb971033?

  • So far it seems that uninstalling kb971033 solved the problem of the warning window popping up.
It was becoming quite a nuisance.

  • It's no wonder...  On looking that particular update up it appears kb971033 was published in response to illegal versions of Windows that are circulating.  Microsoft may have clamped down a bit too hard, though, given that it's actually triggering the warning on legit evaluation installations.

  • I have not had the pop-up return.  And I hid that particular update.

  • I have just tried uninstalling kb971033, hopefully that worked. (You just go to programmes and features, then click 'uninsall updates' on the left.)

Will find out if it has worked soon... it's pretty ridiculous, you have no idea how pissed off I've been thinking what a waste it was to bother with a genuine copy and getting treated like a criminal! The updates started off pretty infrequently but this week it's been as much as every 10 minutes or so. Shall update on here if it does work..

  • Thank the criminals for that - it's hard to blame Microsoft for trying to protect their sales.  Stealing software is just that - stealing - and the software manufacturer isn't the only victim.

  • Hello,

I have recently noticed that my Lenovo desktop has a message on the bottom right of the screen upon loading Windows 7 Ultimate. This is a  copy I won through a promotion at Tiger Direct. I still have the DVD and package it came in. When I look at the System Properties, it says Windows is activated. I checked the installed updates and see two updates that do not show a Publisher. the updates are kb971033 and update kb958488. I have not uninstalled any updates.

Any suggestions on how to correct this?

    Thanks,

    Peter
