Big performance problems

    Question

  • My Vista SP1 Dell Vostro 1700 Notebook is very slow since about two weeks.

    • Have discovered that svchost.exe is using about 85% of CPU all the time. The processes behind are PlugandPlay and DCOMLaunch
    • Have discovered with Sysinternals process monitor that my system has thousands of accesses per second to the files c:\windows\inf\infstor.dat and c:\windows\inf\infstore.pub.
    • Have the following events in my application eventlog:
      - <Event xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/win/2004/08/events/event">
      - <System>
        <Provider Name="Microsoft-Windows-Search" Guid="{CA4E628D-8567-4896-AB6B-835B221F373F}" EventSourceName="Windows Search Service" />

    • Have verified that my system has the latest drivers, is free from Viruses and has no non functional devices in the device manager.

    Any advice how to make my system work again? Thank you in advance for any help
    Franz
