Metro apps won't start under consumer preview of Windows 8

    Question

  • I upgraded from Windows 7 Pro to Windows 8 Consumer Preview and the Metro apps won't start when clicked. The app appears to start, the screen fills up with a green background with the app logo centered, but nothing happens afterwards. After searching for a similar issue on the web, I've found a few posts regarding a similar issue in the developer preview and have already verified that my resolution is large enough - 1440x900, and that UAC is properly enabled.

The Windows Event viewer shows only one anormal event - DCOM Event ID 10010 (Service failed to register within the time provided), after the application fails to start. But I believe this is more a result of the problem I'm having and not the cause.

My install is on a Dell XPS laptop, and not inside a virtual machine.

I'm not prepared yet to do a clean install and would like to have it work with my installed apps.

  • Hi Gabriel,

Please could you post the event information here?

What is the account name that you are trying to launch the Apps under? Could you also try using a new account to test the same.

    Thanks!

  • Exact same problem.  Dell Studio 1558 laptop.  I thought it might be the video card.  Resolution is high enough.  UAC is on.

Video card is a Radeon Mobility HD 5470.  I'm out of bright ideas.

    UPDATE:

Created a local profile.  Logged into that.  Same problem...plus a new one.  That one came up with partly Chinese text on all the icons.

  • fuzzysmit, did you do a clean install or upgrade?

I'm going to get the event information ASAP and try under a new account as suggested by johnfern.

    Thursday, March 01, 2012 4:21 PM
  • Upgrade from 7 ultimate.

I did try a new account.  That didn't work either.  And the apps were labelled in Chinese.  Is there something I can provide that will help?  A log or something?  If so, how do I get it?

    Thursday, March 01, 2012 4:42 PM
  • fuzzysmith, if you check the Application event log, do you have a DCOM error like I do?
    Thursday, March 01, 2012 4:42 PM
  • Where are you looking?  In event viewer, applications and services log...and then where?

I do have an error that repeats every 60 seconds.

    0000000034: 2012-03-01 08:50:09:913    Exception <Killing CCC0 Process>: Process with an Id of 4664 is not running.

Actually, I have a ton of errors that are all related to the graphics driver.

I'll get back you on once i've been able to test this out.

  • I had the same issue during the developer preview version. The culprit was definately the video driver/resolution. Maybe you could double check.

Here's the DCOM event that occurs when trying to start the calendar:

    EventId 10010

Description "The server Microsoft.WindowsLive.Calendar.wwa did not register with DCOM within the required timeout."

  • I have experienced the exact same problem with Metro apps when upgrading from Windows 7 to Windows 8 (and tried resolution, UAC, local account, and refresh fixes as well) on one of my two Dell Latitude laptops. The one that runs metro apps is a D820 and the one that doesn't is a D830.

There are only three differences between the the two systems:

    1. The D820 is 32-bit and the D830 is 64-bit
    2. The D820 was running Win7 Pro and the D830 was running Win7 Ulitimate
    3. I used PC Mover to migrate from the D820 to the D830 about 4 months ago (Yeah, I'm behind the times.)

Here is an example of an Error from Windows Logs\System when I try to launch a Metro app:

  • Lenovo x201t, same issue. Resolution is ok.
    Friday, March 02, 2012 2:47 AM
  • Same exact thing here. I have a XPS also with dual ATI cards. Drivers are all updated and resolution is high. Also tried UAC and creating a new account..no dice. Sure would be nice to get a fix for this.

  • Is anyone experiencing the issue not on ATI/AMD?  If so, please specify your video card.

Does this very latest version of the ATI/AMD driver help?

  • Same problem here on my Asus EEE Box with a nvidia ION2 card. I also updated from Windows 7 Pro. Does anyone know if a clean install fixes the problem.
    Friday, March 02, 2012 8:11 AM
  • Same problem. I have custom built computer, integrated geForce 6150 as gpu. Resolution is full HD, so that is not the problem. I upgraded from Windows 7 Ultimate 32 bit (almost certain it is 32bit). Same as an earlier commenter, creating a local account changed metro apps names into chinese (?) letters.

I set the computer to "refresh" itself last night, I'll test later tonight if it made a difference.

    edit:
Read somwhere, that Metro apps do not work with administrator accounts. My original account on the computer had administrator rights. Maybe I should try creating a new, normal user account and linking my Microsoft id to that.

  • Apps for me also go in fullscreen with there logo seen in the middle just to dissappear a few seconds later. Seems they still run in the background.
Upgrade installation from windows 7. ATI Grafics card.
Already tried the ATI Windows 8 drivers no change.

  • same problem on a dell d420 with intel mobile 945 graphics. The driver(wddm1.0) was provided by windows update.

upgrade from german win7 pro. all settings and apps preserved.

i also have error events from "apphost" and "schannel".

opening a pdf with the metro reader also throws an error message "call was canceled by message filter".

I could start the metro internet explorer with a link to a local html file; the same trick for pdf however did not work.

  • Thanks for the details guys. I had a similar issue in my lab, however not for Metro Apps but other Metro Functionality. This was fixed by installing the drivers from Windows Update.

In my lab, I tore down the just upgraded laptop and did a fresh install, everything worked out fine then (no issues, apps or otherwise). The issue seen might be related to the upgrade and not the install. I'm working on getting information on what needs to be installed to get things going.

If required, I might need more logs. But that will be later.

If someone is willing to do a fresh install on their machine and post the results it will help us to narrow down the source or the crashes.

    Thanks!

  • John, do you have a shortcut to automatically update all the drivers? If I go to Windows Update I don't see any driver update. I manually updated the driver for my ATI Radeon mobile but that didn't fix it.

    Friday, March 02, 2012 5:13 PM
  • rseiler, this looks related to the DCOM security settings. I think the upgrade process does not update the settings so you have a problem when trying to launch Metro apps. I assume it will be fixed before Win 8 ships.
    Friday, March 02, 2012 6:36 PM
  • That fix worked great! Thanks John!

  • Sweet! Thanks for trying it out.

Alternately you can also delete the OLE key and reboot, that will rebuild the permissions of DCOM.

    Path: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Ole

For what every reason I coudn't import the registry settings, which is why I deleted the OLE Key.
Trying to import the reg file (double clicking on it) I got an error message telling me the file is not a registry file and registry files could only be imported using the registry editor. Using the Registry editor and trying to import the file caused the same error message.

  • I can0t find any detail description of your problem in this thread. Could you provide detailed information on what you are doing, how the system behaves. What account are you using?
Maybe you got another problem there?
    Saturday, March 03, 2012 1:23 AM
  • Other resolutions i have seen work are:

    • Update Graphic Drivers. (You can even try uninstalling the GPU and using the Built-In Driver [Testing Only])
    • Update the App from the Store.
    • Make sure that you are not running as Integrated Administrator
    • Uninstall the App and reinstall from the Store.
    • Minimum Resolution for Apps to run is 1024x768 (i'd recommend 1366x768)

If you have further issue please post detailed behavior and related event logs (Specifically DCOM)

    Thanks!

  • I just did an upgrade on a particular machine, don't have the problem, but also don't have the MachineLaunchRestriction key.

Is it possible to develop the problem over time, or if you're going to get it do you see it right away? I'll see how long I can go without adding it.

  • This also happened to me which turned out to be a bad install. I didn't have to do a clean install, however. Using the "refresh PC" option in the Metro Settings > General page seemed to resolve the problem, although it asked me to insert my installation DVD (ISO) because it found missing files.

After this (which took a whole of about 5 minutes to complete) it seemed to resolve my problem.

  • I searched for HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Ole and came up with nothing. Taking off the Ole I got a bunch of files, but I have no clue what any of them mean. I have the latest drivers for my AMD Radeon HD6870, I've tried multiple accounts, my resolution is 1920x1080, and I've got the latest Windows updates. Still, none of the metro apps open for me, and I constantly have freezing and slow down issues. For example, once I exit this browser and try to open something else up, it will probably get stuck with the loading circle cursor and nothing happens and I have to turn my computer off. This is getting so frustrating I just want to go back to Windows 7, but I haven't the slightest clue on how to do that either since trying to install with the Windows 7 upgrade disk isn't allowed.

where ole key and what delete thanks

    The one here:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Ole

You could delete it manually with regedit, or you could copy the following into a DeleteOLE.REG file, save it with Notepad to the Desktop, run it, then reboot.

    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Ole]

    Saturday, March 03, 2012 9:59 PM
  • OK, I used regedit and found it. Now do I delete the whole OLE folder, or a certain file in the folder?
    Saturday, March 03, 2012 11:35 PM
  • Just right-click on "Ole" and left-click Delete. You don't want to bother with deleting only part of it, so that gets it all.
    Saturday, March 03, 2012 11:41 PM
  • OK, thanks, I'll try that out.
    Saturday, March 03, 2012 11:55 PM
  • Still doesn't work.

    Sunday, March 04, 2012 4:25 AM
  • I also tried everything mentioned above. Still the metro apps won't open. When I add the registry code, nothing changes. When I delete the OLE key and reboot, I get a black desktop with an empty task-bar...

The strange thing: When I open the app-directory in windows explorer ( %windir%\explorer.exe shell:::{4234d49b-0245-4df3-b780-3893943456e1} ), I can see, that all the apps that don't work, are "grey".

By the way: I use the consumer preview (ISO-image), 32 bit, in German language.

    Sunday, March 04, 2012 8:22 AM
  • I have the same issue. I'm with desktop PC and 1920x1080. The metro-apps just freeze at the splash screen. The GPU is GTX-560 and I use the W8 drivers from nVidia.

Non of the solutions are working for now and don't know how to proceed.

    Sunday, March 04, 2012 12:28 PM
  • I already did a clean install. The installer can't find my GeForce FX 5200 and installs the Standard VGA adapter. With this one, I only have a very low resolution and everything is very slow (and the metro apps won't open, too). Afterwards I've installed the nVidia driver (win vista) and everything works great, except the metro apps :-(

Windows update is not suggesting any alternative drivers.

By the way: Same problem with a ATI 9600 card.

  • Hi,

I got the same issue, the post below could help you :

For Metro apps problems, check the following:

-You need at least 1024X768 resolution for Metro apps to work.

-Confirm if the issue reproduces with all user accounts. Metro appsaren’t supported if you are running with a built-in administrator account (happens mostly when upgrading).

-Check if UAC(User Account Control) is enabled. UAC must be enabled for Metro apps to work. To check, simply typeUACfrom the home screen and it will appear on the Settingssearch result.

-Try using a local account instead of a Microsoft account(Live ID).

    -Refresh your PC.

    e.g. :http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_8-windows_programs/unable-to-run-any-applications-onto-metro/3c41ca28-1f65-43f3-8569-e0a13431cddc?tab=MoreHelp

  • I got the same issue and resolution is not the problem (am running at 1920x1080). The only thing that I can apply from your check list is that I use an account which belongs to the Administrator group (and also tied to my Windows Live ID). Is that what you meant by "built-in administrator account"? What is the workaround in this case?

    Thanks for your help.

    Tuesday, March 06, 2012 1:48 AM
  • The Built-In Administrator account is the default account. I.E. MachineName\Administrator (Server) or MachineName\Admin (Client).

Being part of the administrators group (local/domain) does not mean the same.

    Thanks!

  • John...I've tried every fix u posted and none of them work...I have tried to see why the apps work for the first time and then the don't open again...it happens after installing something that might alter the system settings...To check this I did a clean install after formatting the hard drive, and then launched the windows, the apps were all working fine...then I installed the display drivers, and still the apps worked fine...and by fine I mean playing with them for almost an hour with multiple restarts and updating the pics, music, video library to make sure that they work...now, when I install a small program to use my USB modem, none of the metro apps work...I tried every solution u posted but none works...so I hope I helped, and if u need anything more from me I can help. but plz try to find  a solution to this.

  • I deleted the OLE key rebooted, signed in but now have a black/blank screen except for a blank taskbar?

Any ideas on what I should do to get my machine back online... I do have a backup of the original registry but not sure how to get it back on the a machine no longer working... Is there a safe mode method to restore or? thanks.

Same here, backed up registry key, stored system settings and deleted OLE key and its subfolders and then I had the same thing. Can't see anything to do a restore of any type.  Tried a system refresh and still have the same blank taskbar and screen.

Any ideas? Did I do something wrong?

  • create a crash dump.

Please download this reg file from my SkyDrive:

    http://cid-128fc518635be2dc.office.live.com/self.aspx/.Public/MS%20Foren/Registry/LocalDumps.reg

and make a double click on the file to import it.

When an application crashes (like WWAHost.exe), Windows Error Reporting Service [1] creates a dmp file under C:\Localdumps. Please upload the dump (zip it first) to your public Skydrive [2] folder and post the link here.

  • The Pinball FX metro application will not launch.

    Microsoft suggested the following:

"A potential manual solution has been identified - reset the permissions to allow all app containers."

Where & How do I do this? (reset the permissions to allow all app containers)

    Thanks.

  • I did a fresh install of windows 8 64-bit english Consumer Preview. I don't recommend trying these registry fixes until you know you can restore the registry from a backup. I just deleted the /Ole folder as someone suggested, and after a restart everything was bugging out. I tried to restore the registry from the backup I made, but now it is warning me that it is unable to import the registry settings. I think I am going to have to reinstall...

Not only can I not start metro apps, but:

-the right click dialogue with all the handy shortcuts (like regedit, compmgmt) in the bottom left corner of the screen no longer comes up.

-Sometimes I cannot type into the start menu. Plugging in my keyboard again fixes this. Even when using a standard USB keyboard this still happens. In addition that, I noticed USB devices stay on even when the computer is turned off. This used to happen in Windows 7 before I turned off selective USB suspend, but it still happens on Win8 if it is turned off.

-I tried removing the pre-release ATI drivers, but windows will automatically download the same exact driver and install it.

-The system freezes randomly now, particularly when I put my cursor in a corner or just after I switch to desktop from trying to start a Metro app.

-If I try to start a metro app, and then it closes because of the error everyone is having, then my computer will not shut down. i.e. permanent "shutting down..."

-Anything that uses OpenGL and java (Minecraft, my keyboard drivers) throws an error 126 when I try to open them. This is unrelated to the metro app problem (I think), but I might as well throw it into the mix.

  • Hi Davechow1,

I had the same issue. Basically it looks like the OLE key is not recreated. So, to fix...

    1. Create the REG file and drop it onto a USB key.

    2. boot up to the black screen and empty taskbar.

    3. Hit Windows Key+R to get the run box up.

    4. type regedit and press enter to start the registry editor

    5. insert the USB key

    6. from the registry editor, click file / import and select the reg file from the usb key

    7. once complete, confirm that the OLE key is now in the right location HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Ole

    8. exit the registry editor and reboot (I ran shutdown /r /t 00 from the command prompt which can be started from win+R cmd)

This got me back into Windows with the Metro screen etc. However, Metro apps are still not running for me. I believe my issue is graphics driver related (Atom N2800 / Intel GMA 3600).  The Intel GMA 3600 series drivers are flakey even in Win7. But I'm still investigating.

  • Thanks Trevor...

I was actually able to get things working by keeping the black screen and empty taskbar boot stay up for ~ 1 hour. I was able to log off and back on, reapply the saved REG... Metro apps will open but very slow and sometimes not at all … e.g. Pinball FX. For that app MS said to reset the permissions to allow all app containers... but I've figured out how to do that yet...

    Wednesday, March 07, 2012 1:56 AM
  • I’ve narrowed my issue down to the Intel GMA 3600 Series driver (8.14.8.1065). If I switch to the Microsoft Basic Video Driver, Metro Apps run fine.

    I retrieved this from the MEMORY.DMP file….

  • I searched for days until I found this post and the answer! All the display driver stuff turned out to be red herrings for me and what worked was simple: delete the ole key (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Ole), reboot and recreate using the reg file from JoseFernandes. Now, all the apps are launching. Bravo!

  • Hi Pololig,

No problem. I'll try and expand on the steps a little...

On another PC, using notepad create a REG file by copying and pasting the text below (from JohnFernandes previous post) and save it to a USB key (make sure you grab all the text, including the first line “Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00”)

    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    00,00,20,02,00,00

Insert the USB Key with the newly created REG file into your Windows 8 device.

On the Windows 8 device start the Windows Registry Editor by pressing the Windows Key and ‘R’ (Win+R) to bring up the run box, then type regedit.exe and press enter.

In the Windows Registry Editor, click on File in the top menu, then click “Import…”

In the Import Registry File dialog, navigate to the REG file on the USB key and click the Open button.

Confirm that you want to import the registry settings.

Exit the registry editor and reboot your Windows 8 Device.

I rebooted mine by opening a command prompt (Win+R, then type cmd and press enter) and typing “shutdown /r /t 00” (without the quotes) and press enter.

    Hope that helps.

    Trevor.

Have you changed the DPI settings?

    Answerer
  • No, I'm not. I always use the default 100% DPI.

BTW I made a clean install and I notice the metro app are fine and working well until I install the 295.73 WHQL Nvidia driver for my GTX 560. With the built-in drivers the Metro apps are ok, but I can't use the full power of my video card. So, we just have to wait for the proper driver.

    Anyway, thanks for your support.

  • I have worked in the Merto only Finance. Others do not start at all, including Finance on the full screen. Music and Photos that display "call was canceled by message filter". Icon Store have number 1 in the lower right corner. I downloaded a single application, but it was not established until the end.

Working with the registry did not help. The local user is not admin, resolution 1280x1024. UAC works. What should I do?

P.S. Installing - clear, not update.

SOLUTION: Open Run By Windows key + R. Enter notepad n open Then save below registry value and save to something like OLE.reg

Open run enter regedit then merge to. u know where to merge. OR use 2nd Method drop down.

Open Run by Windows Key + R. Enter cmd and open. default user path already exit, go where the OLE.reg save and RUN. Restart System. We are back with all happening. Now use refresh or change account type to standard or exit live account or something else that make metro app work again.

If you install any driver like modem, Network Card, Wifi Adapter or any other. Please do a system restore. Because we are in a beta stage. Microsoft is busy to making a super os that work with laptops, PCs n tablets. Work with arm precessor, because ANDROID is angry. :-)

  • I don't have this particular problem so can't test this, but something suspiciously similar (identical?) showed up in Windows Update today:

You cannot start an application from the tile in Windows 8 Consumer Preview

This problem may occur when the following conditions are true:

    • This application was previously started.
    • This application then became suspended.
    • The Windows shell crashed and restarted when the application became suspended.

    ###

Here's another one, seemingly related, though not part of Windows Update:

Some apps may stop working several days after installation in Windows 8 Consumer Preview

If you install a new app from Windows Store on a computer that is running Windows 8 Consumer Preview, the app may terminate unexpectedly several days later.

The native image service generates native images for all managed app assemblies to improve performance. This process occurs during the Windows maintenance hour, typically overnight. When the app is started the next time, the native image that is newly generated is loaded.

This issue occurs in managed apps because of a tracking error in generic type instantiation tracking that leads to an inconsistent environment in which duplicate instantiations are created and used.

I think you'll have to be a little more specific. One of them, both of them, or something else?

John, before I try this fix my machine launch restriction has 8 more bytes than your fix.  Any problem with that?  or is that the bug?  in addition some of your values are different than mine.

    Hi tgillies,

You don't have to merge the registry key. If you just delete the OLE Key and reboot, that would be better. If your existing key has 8bytes more that means that you have additional permissions (this does not mean that they are not valid).

Delete > Reboot > Test - This will rebuild the OLE Key and will create the appropriate permissions.

    Thanks!

  • I have also tried all the "solutions" above but none worked.  I imported reg file above into the Registry and also deleted the ole key, but it did not solve the problem.

The Metro apps were working for a while and then stopped working.

  • I have been working on this issue all day, so here is what i have found.

apart from the obvious screen resolution settings being 1024x768 or greater

if on a corporate network or using a proxy server you may need to set the metro apps to pint to the proxy as they don't seem to be picking up this from the local policy settings

    1. hit the windows key +R and type gpedit.msc

    navigate to computer settings

    admin template

    network

network isolation you should see options to the right for metro apps

you would need to change only the one for internet and add in your proxy settings 192.168.1.1:80   (example)

you will also need to enable the first option top right to stop automatically checking for proxy settings.

once you have done this when you open up your metro app they still sit there complaining of no network so on the internet explorer type in a new web page and it should refresh and work.

I also have an issue where something on our group policy is breaking this default workstation policy which when applied the app fires up and then closes down after a few seconds and produces a dcom error in the registry.

putting the pc in a new OU without a policy applied and all apps work with the proxy settings enabled . (still working on this one)

hope this has been some help

  • I have tried your solution. But when I click on "admin templates" I get an error message: "Snap-in could not be initialised" (don't know the correct English error message, I have the German edition).

  • I'm neither on a corporate network nor use a proxy.  The Metro apps were working fine when connecting my laptop to various networks.  I also never changed the screen resolution.  I used both a Microsoft Account and a local account; neither helped.  Just one day they no longer work.

  • My install of the consumer preview was on a clean and formatted SSD I had just bought and put into my ASUS G73sw laptop. I have run into s similar problem with most people here where the apps run fine for a few days and then all of a sudden stop working. I click them and nothing happens, only the tilting of the tile to indicate I did indeed click it. The weather apps still seems to update though, even if I can't open it.

Other things I've noticed is that I can still search for the apps, and they are still there. The App Store has disappeared, completely. I can't find any trace of it, even in the application folder searched through with the explorer. One last thing, I don't know if it's related at all, but it caught my attention, there are like 70 internet explorer processes suspended that I see on the task manager. I never even use, let alone start internet explorer from the moment my laptop boots up. Also, on a side note for me, task manager crashes when I close it, especially when it's expanded for more details; it'll just have go blank and not respond.

I've tried all solutions listed here, save for a clean reinstall. I have all windows updates too, if that helps.

  • I deleted the OLE key rebooted, signed in but now have a black/blank screen except for a blank taskbar?

Any ideas on what I should do to get my machine back online... I do have a backup of the original registry but not sure how to get it back on the a machine no longer working... Is there a safe mode method to restore or? thanks.

same here. I had to launch win8 setup with cmd to repair win8 (win+R still worked)

everything seem fine since - still have the proxy issue though but it's another thread

  • I also had this problem, but I had it after doing a "Windows Easy Transfer" from my Win7 account. Everything worked great before that. After the transfer I had some stuff like Photos metro app name showing upp in chinease, never had anything to do with china or chinese settings ever in Win7. Anyway the programs began working again after deleting the key and rebooting. I haven't found any Event errors.

I had the latest ATI video drivers installed allready.

    John,

I deleted the OLE key and rebooted.

The touch keyboard won't run. I can connect a keyboard and login, but after I login it goes to the desktop instead of the metro start screen. The desktop is black, without my wallpaper and the taskbar is empty with just the keyboard icon. No icon for ie or live mail as before.

I can access a command prompt with the windows key + r and run things like msconfig and ie.  ie will start and go to google but most pages won't run. Live mail won't start.  I can run regedit and there isn't any OLE key so it didn't rebuild it when I rebooted.

The windows key shortcuts won't bring up any of the charms or other metro functions.

If I could figure out how to access refresh or reset from a command prompt I would do that or I would restore my windows 7 image and start over by down loading windows 8 again.

edit: found the solution.  added a blank Ole key and rebooted.  Metro interface and Metro apps are back.

  • I have the same. Deleting the Ole key results in black screen. Adding the key back get metro back, but apps still don't work. I gave it up. This whole metro thing is crap and nothing works.

  • Having UAC actually turned off (opposed to the "fake" bottom level setting Microsoft provides) will prevent Metro apps from running.  It's pretty careful to tell you why in that case, though.

  • I finally decided to make use of that nifty refresh feature in the Windows 8 Recovery/Installation using a flash drive. After the refresh the apps were working again for me, although it didn't restore my missing App Store. So then I just went all the way with it and did a complete reset. Things seem fine... so far. So for any of the people here who don't mind losing all the programs and apps they installed after the initial installation, try using the refresh feature. You can access it when the computer first boots up at the blue screen under advanced options>troubleshooting. You won't lose any documents with it.

  • I'm happy for those who resolved their problems with the solutions given here, but I am still stuck. And I'm afraid that, this thread being marked as "answered", it is doomed to be silent now. Anyway, I have the feeling that I am not the only one with the problem, so :

Every metro app I try to launch displays a full blue screen for 15-20 seconds, and then comes back to the start screen. Typical example : internet explorer. It runs OK in the classic desktop mode.

UAC is activated. My screen resolution is high (1680x1050). I imported the registry keys given in this thread, no results. I deleted the OLE key, after reboot I had a blank screen, problem already mentioned by someone in this thread. I reimported the registry keys, the display became OK again, but the metro apps still don't work. I tried to refresh my PC, it told me files were missing. I gave the Windows 8 DVD, it began to run, but finished with an unexpected error. Wow ... Am I such a loser ?

Can someone tell me if this thread is still active, or do I have to look for an answer elsewhere ?

Last thing : Windows 8 Consumer Preview is installed in a French Version, as a .vhd file on a Windows 7 64-bit Pro box. My graphical card is a NVIDIA GeForce310.

    Thanks for any help ...

Deleting the key did not solve the issue for me, Ole key has not been rebuild other than the basic entry after a reboot.
Metro IE, Mail and other Apps still fail to start - regular IE also fails to start.

    Any suggestions?

  • I'm bumping this thread, after the RTM release and as a clean install all of the apps just sit there and spin for me.  All the event viewer shows is that it was waiting longer than expected.  I'm signed in with my Windows Live account as the profile.  The people and pictures apps show data, but I can't even get into the store to update or install an app.

  • Hi John,

i have here an Asus B-121 Slate PC. Win8(RTM) works like a charm and i like it very much.

Problem here is only that some Apps aren't working -> Cut the Rope, PirateslovesDaisys...

I get the same error in the eventlog.....now i wanted to delete the OLE KEY, but Win tells me that i can't delete it :(

    *Stuck*

So i do now a reinstall, but out of the Settings in Win8......is this the same like a new install from Disc ??

And do you have an idea, why i couldn't delete the reg key ?

Any help is very appreciated......best regards

This is an ongoing issue for many people.

    Just a heads up.

Open command prompt as admin and write:

    netsh
    winhttp
    import proxy source=ie

Hope it helps, unfortunately I do not remember the source of this script.

  • I am not a geeky kind of person; I "had" a windows 7 pc; 4 gb ram and everything set accordingly so that metro apps should have worked.  Windows 8 was installed as an upgrade to my Windows 7 on accident... Didn't know what I was doing (lol) to install it as a dual boot.  No  matter what I tried the Metro apps would not work correctly.  I tried to delete the Registry key "ole" that a lot of other people said helped.  The PC denied me access to the file.  I didn't know what else to try.  I did see someone post on deleting 3rd party software, and that the firewall might be blocking them.  So, after days of frustration I tried uninstalling the 3 party anti-virus program I had been using since I got the pc brand new!  I rebooted and VOILA!  All the metro apps work and I'm signed in as an administrator and have the account linked to Microsoft and my hotmail account.  I have not tried this in a local account as I was so excited that I got the apps to work, I forgot to try.

I hope this helps others get theirs to work as well...

  • Thanks Tycklz. I had the exact same problem of none of the Metro apps launching after my win7 to win8 upgrade. reading your post, reminded me about my anti-virus. Removing my old anti-virus software (Avast) has resolved the issue and i can now enjoy using win8.

  • It seems to be that Windows Firewall needs to be enabled and possible Windows Defender as well. If you install Another antivirus it disables the build in Windows Firewall/Defender and it breaks the Windows store apps.

The solution of the problem is to type in the administrator command prompt :

    sfc /scannow

After 100%, Restart computer...... and enjoy....

It is a system repair without losing installed programs.
