Upgrade Application Fails. Cannot Install Release Preview over Consumer Preview: WDSUTIL.dll is missing from your computer

  • Hello, I am trying to upgrade my Consumer Preview setup to Release Preview. I created a bootable USB stick from the

    Now, when starting the setup.exe application from the USB drive in a booted Consumer Preview OS, I get the following sequence of messages:

    ---------------------------
    setup.exe - System Error
    ---------------------------
    The program can't start because WDSUTIL.dll is missing from your computer. Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem. 
    ---------------------------
    OK   
    ---------------------------

    and then

    ---------------------------
    Install Windows
    ---------------------------
    The file 'autorun.dll' could not be loaded or is corrupt. Setup cannot continue. Error code is [0x7E]
    ---------------------------
    OK   

    I verified the downloaded ISO with a SHA-1 checksum and the installation media is intact.

    I am using Windows 8 Release Preview with Apps (x64) - DVD (English). What could be the problem?
