Can't turn on File sharing or Printer sharing in Vista

    Question

  • I am running Vista Home Premium sp2 on a Dell XPS430 64 bit.  I can't turn on file sharing, printer sharing, or Network discovery.  When I try, I get the error "The specified service does not exist as an installed service".  The processes Server and Workstation are running. Any ideas?

  • I never did figure out what was going on with the file sharing in Vista, but I recently upgraded to Windows 7 and file sharing is now okay. For this and other reasons, I've decided that Vista is just an upgraded version of Windows ME.

  • Hi,

From the Services.msc, please make sure the following services are turned on:

    SSDP Discovery
    TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper
    Computer Browser
    Server

  • They were all running except Computer Browser. When I tried to start it, I got an error:

Windows could not start the Computer Browser service on local computer.  Error 1060: The specified service does not exist as an installed service.

After poking around a bit, I discovered that I couldn't find Netsvcs on the C: drive.  Do I need the Dell system disc or is there somewhere I could download a Vista version?

  • Hi,

It probably due to corrupt registry. We need to replace the registry.

If you can find another working Windows Vista with the same version and service pack, export the following registry:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services

You can find specific serverices that does not work and export the registry.

Backup the registry on the problematic Vista by exporting the current registry. Double click the correct regitry exported before to import and replace the problematic registry.

If it does not work, best way is the run SFC or repair system.

    Regards,

if you'r missing core files in your C: drive run "sfc /scannow" from command prompt

  • I don't usually post on these forums but this was so annoying for me I wanted to try my best to help anyone solve this problem.

    Here's what worked for me:

Server was started as a service.

    1. Click the start orb

    2. Type msconfig and open it

    3. Select the Services tab

    4. Look for Server and make sure its ticked

    5. Restart and hopefully this solves your issue...

    Good luck!

  • Thanks for the advice, but the Server service is set to Automatic and is running.  I stopped and started it, but no change.
