Windows 7 Pro 64, Devices and Printers, freezes apart from green bar at top, never reachs right edge.

    Question

  • Tried the suggestions, ie8 re-reg, have no HP / devices, Nothing displays in the window, and the mouse stays as a circle with colour spinning. Was running win7 beta till it expired (with no problems) and the fresh install of 7 pro has this issue. All my printers & devices work ok, but I can't see them in this window.

  • Thats the thing, everything works. My printers one is multifunctional also a scanner I can use all of them, also device manager shows no unknown or ! devices.

    So I have
G5 mouse (same issue with logitech or MS driver)
USB keyboard (same issue with genius or MS driver)
Epson CX3900 printer /scanner inkjet (same issue with brother or MS driver)

    HP 4150 via the network

*Office 2010 with its XPS printer gadget
*Office 2010  beta with its send to one note

    Bullzip PDF
    *Microsfot Fax

    * I have removed with no change.

Now my control panel is also blank, immediately, at least I don't have to wait to see nothing.

EDIT: Ok after the control panel issue I restarted, and everything works. I guess thats what you get with beta software. (meaning office 2010)

  • What do you have installed of printers and devices thats supposed to show up here?

Maybe its some sort of driver issue.
Try and disconnect all of them, then open the window. If this works, plug in one device/printer and open it again. Do this untill you find the device that causes the problem.

  • I ran into this problem on a couple of computers. I spent 4 hours fixing it. That is a very long time to spend on one problem for an MSP. In the ends this is what I did to fix it.

    1) Stop the print spooler (run services.msc)

    2) Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\spool\PRINTERS and delete the contents of that folder

    3) Start the print spooler

    4) Open the "devices and printers" control panel

    5) WHILE the panel is trying to open, restart the print spool service

When I did this I saw a printer which didn't exist anymore but was still installed. I removed that printer and closed and re-opened the "Devices and Printers" control panel and everything worked again.
