  • Hi Jannerhank,

The *.msc files should be opened with mmc.exe file, which located in "%windir%\system32" folder.

When you are prompted that Windows needs to know the program:

    1. Choose "select a program from the list of installed programs",

    2. Click "Broswe..." to navigate to C:\Windows\System32 and locate mmc.exe.

    3. Click Open to back to "Open With" window.

    4. Make sure the option "Always use the selected program to open this kind of file" is selected.

    5. Click OK button.

    Hope it helps.

  • Hi,

Did you mean that you cannot open the Administrative Tools folder in Control Panel? Or the tools in the folder cannot run?
Is there any message prompted? Please also open the Event Viewer and check if any error message exist.

Have you scan the system for virus? Have you setup any tools before this happens? The following KB article may help you if this is your scenario.

You experience installation errors and compatibility problems when you install Windows Server 2003 management tools on a Windows Vista-based computer

If it doesn't help, try a system restore, which may be a good solution.

    Thanks.

  • Hi,

I can open the Administrative Tools folder, but none of the tools in the folder will open. All 10 programs shown are 2KB shortcuts, klick on any one and and a message comes up:-

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

      Windopws cannot open this file:

    File:    Computer Managerment = compmgmt.msc

To open this file, Windows needs to know what program you want to use to open it.

Windows can go online to look it up automatically, or you can manually select from

a list of programs that are installed on your computer.

What do you want to do?

O Use the web service to find the correct program

O Seect a program from the list of installed programs

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Also for the following also the follow do the same

    Event Viewer File =eventvwr.msc

Reliability and Proformance Monitor = perfmon.msc

    Services = services.msc

    Task Scheduler = taskschd.msc

Windows Firewall with Advance Security = WF.msc

Use the web produces 'can not find a program'

Select a program, I can only open it in Note Pad, which is goobly *** to me.

This was not like this when I installed Vista 64 and has happened after a Microsft automatic download not certain what one as the only one I choose was the Vista 64 SP 1.
