  • I wish I had an answer, but my 2 x64 installs are doing the same thing.  Seems funny it pops up on a newly installed system with the only installed update being the KB979903 (Hotfix for large memory stop errors).  Whether the message concerns this update, or a later one being evaluated, I cannot tell.  Mine showed up around the end of May 2011.

Most of the folks giving answers seem to throw this in with a general "cannot download updates" type scenario, when it is specific, and reproduceable, but does not seem to hinder the update process.

Either something was downloaded to our systems that should not have been and needs to be cleared, or Microsoft needs to check there servers and remove this problem.

Information about where we might look for this anomaly would be appreciated.

  • Hi,

    According to the error code:

0x80242013 WU_E_UH_BADCBSPACKAGEID The update metadata contains an invalid CBS package identifier.

Try the methods in the article below:

You cannot install some updates or programs

Also, you can install the System Update Readiness Tool to see if it can fix this issue:

Description of the System Update Readiness Tool for Windows Vista, for Windows Server 2008, for Windows 7, and for Windows Server 2008 R2

  • Thanks for the suggestions.  I followed some of the links and checked things like catroot2 and any other folders or logs I could find.  The Update id is not listed anywhere I can find, including the Windows Update catalog, which says something by itself.

A fresh install without being connected to the net until Windows Update was set to do nothing was done.  Once the net was connected, all I did was to check for updates and the warning appeared in the WindowsUpdate.log.  Nothing else was downloaded, so I will have to assume the check is being conducted prior to anything being offered for download.

Since it seems the warning is saying the referenced update cannot be evaluated for the install rule, my only conclusion is an errant update number is on a server.  The only update I can find around the end of May seems to be Windows 7 SP1, so it may be related to that.

I downloaded SP1 directly and installed it before other updates, but it did not help.  So, to me it still appears the folks that author the updates need to straighten this out.

Thanks again..if I ever find an answer, I will post back.
