    Question

  • Hi everyone,

I'm hoping someone can help me with my issue.

When I try to connect to my LAPTOP via my PC (by typing in \\LAPTOP in Windows Explorer), I get the following error:

\\LAPTOP is not accessible. You might not have permissions to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions. Access is denied.

    My setup is as follows:

    • Both using XP SP3 freshly installed
    • Both computers have ESET Smart Security
    • Both computers connected via ethernet cable
    • PC/LAPTOP can ping LAPTOP/PC
    • PC/LAPTOP can access LAPTOP/PC via Remote Desktop
    • I have the same common username and password set on both
    • 'File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks' enabled on both
    • From LAPTOP i can access PC via typing \\PC in Windows Explorer (but not other way around)
    • both computers have a static IP address
    • both part of the same workgroup
    • Simple sharing is disabled on both
    • enabling NetBIOS over TCP/IP on both has no effect
    • I can see LAPTOP when I open up (from PC) My Network Places > Entire Network > Microsoft Windows Network > Workgroup. But when I click on LAPTOP I get the above Access Denied...

I should atleast see LAPTOP's default icons 'Printers and Faxes' and 'Scheduled Tasks' when I type in \\LAPTOP on my PC. Even if I create a shared folder on LAPTOP with specific permissions for the common user I have no success. Strange that I can Remote Desktop into LAPTOP from PC, but cannot access a simple share on LAPTOP...

    Any help most appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Peter
