VPN connection stops Internet access on local connection in Windows 7

    Question

  • I have set up a VPN (MS) to a client site on Win7 - this connection is not for email/internet.   When I connect the VPN, it becomes the default connection superceding my local connection ergo no email/internet.  WTF - worked in XP.   I believe it's a routing issue but I'm not sure how to fix it.

This is usually defined in the VPN policy, which allows or disallows
connections outside of the VPN tunnel. Do the XP clients and the Win7
clients use the same policy? Even if outside connections are allowed
you have to make sure, that the DNS server set by the policy is able to
    resolve foreign dns-names.

Of course it is a routing issue, but this routing is set best in the
VPN policy, too. Otherwise you have to let the default route unchanged
(don't let the VPN change the default route) and only route packets to
the VPN connected network over the VPN tunnel via an explicit route.
