Error message -- Windows cannot change the password

    Question

  • I have Windows 7.  There is only one account -- the administrator account. It has no password.  I tried to add a password to the and got the following error message -- "Windows cannot change the password." I tried the methods described in the Answers.Microsoft.com forums: 1) control + alt + Delete; 2) "Computer Management > Local Users and Groups" doesn't appear; 3) Command prompt "net <user name> /Passwordchg:yes"   None of these worked.  Can you help?

  • Hi,

I would like to verify the second situation: Computer Management > Local Users and Groups" doesn't appear.

Do you mean Administrator doesn’t list in Local Users and Group?

Please try to create another administrator account and set the password for it.

I am having the same problem as Stuart, and I tried the second step as well. But the Adminstrator does not list Local Users and Groups.

To better understand this problem, the laptop was bought from a floor display at Best Buy. Is there a program that prevents me from changing the password, or do I have to add something to the system manually? I had to add a Public for the Users in ProfileList manually because it was missing in the regedit and prevented me from installing software.

  • I am having similar issues with a floor display gateway laptop I bought from Best Buy...I am using WINDOWS 7

I have never been able to enter my Admin acct password or change it, since I brought home from store...error message Windows cannot change password... I have made myself another account set as administrator & I cannot add password...get same error message. I have a guest account for my guest...I have a standard user account for roommate & they have password protected.  I want access to my administrator account & change the password to my own password that I know.  The Geek squad wants to charge me for resetting my Administrative account that should have been set up with my own password before I left the store & frankly I don't have $100.00 to spend on it...they obviously, do not understand my particular issue & the above answers have not resolved my issues.  I'm thinking that I will need to start my computer in safe mode with command prompt, then run as administrator(don't know how to accomplish this) & set up my admin account change password, then I should be able to set up a password protected standard account for myself for daily use & manage other accounts with admin account as necessary.  Does anyone know what I should do to resolve this issue???
