Disk Cleanup / Windows Update Cleanup

    Question

  • Hello,

I am running Windows 8 x64 (RTM w/ all updates).  When I try to run the Disk Cleanup tool and select the "Windows Update Cleanup", the computer dwells on the Windows Update Cleanup, but when it finishes the nothing is deleted (in Windows Update Cleanup, all other files are deleted).  So far, I have tried the troubleshooter, but it doesn't fix the issue.  Any ideas?  Thanks, Scott Pessognelli

  • have you replied to the topic and deleted it? When you see the WindowsUpdateCleanUp everytime in Disk Cleanup, it means the updates are permanent and can't be removed. You can edit the MUM file and remove the persistence flag, but only do this if you're sure what you do.

  • reboot Windows and you see the cleanup message:

To see which updates are removed, open the CBS.log and look for Deep-Clean strings:

  • Andre,

I did what you said.  When I checked my CBS.log file, I found lines like this in it:

I searched for the string KB2785094 because this is where I started seeing these errors.

I then tried to manually reinstall KB2784160 (hoping to restore the missing packages listed above) but it didn't replace the missing packages.

Since everything seems otherwise OK, I'll live with it, unless you come up with anything.  Either way, thank you for your help!

  • Search for the string Deep-Clean:. Your entries are not really relevant to cleanup.

  • So, I look foor the string "Deep-Clean" and I can safely remove those files, correct?

  • the updates listed behind Deep-Clean are already uninstalled. This is just a log to tell you which updates are removed.

  • i don't understand.

the "Windows Update Cleanup" option, will delete updates that are no longer needed by the system and take unnecessary space, or it will uninstall them, and i have to download them again?

in my pc it uses 1.2 GB.

  • the removed updates are no longer needed, so there is no need to reinstall them.
