Failure to configure updates, reverting changes

    Question

  • I have tried download both a new Windows Update Agent and trying http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943144 and http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947821/en-gb

I have been trying to fix this for about at least a month now. The updates install and download fine, but every time I restart the page stalls on configuring at 0% and takes approximately 5 minutes before it will say "failure to configure updates, reverting changes." I haven't been able to get any new updates either as these ones continue to fail to install.

    No error message is given.

I am running a HP dv6 Pavillion notebook on Windows 7 Home Premium (64 bit).

Any help would be appreciated! Thanks.

  • Hi aileen ,

I checked the new log and found that the Update KB979538 tries to update the USBvideo.sys and this fails (HRESULT = 0x80070005 - E_ACCESSDENIED).

So, go to WindowsUpdate, make a rightclick on the update and hide this update.

Only install the other updates. Does this work?

  • Hi,

please run the Windows Explorer and go to the folder "C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\" and copy the file "CBS.log" to your document folder (otherwise you can't open it) and open it with notepad. Now search for errors. Which errors do you see?

If you are unsure, please upload the complete CBS.log to your SkyDrive [1] and post a link here.

  • Didn't know how to look for the errors so I uploaded the file to my SkyDrive. Hopefully it's accessible through this link: http://cid-a020cac1cbd94dcc.office.live.com/browse.aspx/.Documents?Bsrc=EMSHHM&Bpub=SN.Notifications Thanks!

  •  Hi,

When you tried the SUR tool (947821), did it complete successfully? If
so, please post the file from %systemroot%\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log. If
not, does it fail to complete after 1-2 hrs,

  • I assume it completed successfully? I remember it saying complete, and then clicking the close button.

    Here is the log:

  • Hi aileen

Cannot perform concurrent read operation while CSI transaction is on the way. [HRESULT = 0x800f0902 - CBS_E_BUSY ]

Startup: Changing logon timeout to a sliding window timeout: 900000
    DriverUpdateEnableDeviceInstall failed [HRESULT = 0x800705b4 - ERROR_TIMEOUT ]

    You have timeout issues.

Make a Cleanboot (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135) and install the updates there.

  • I tried a clean boot, letting only Windows services run. Restart my computer to kick it into effect, then installed the updates and restarted again. Still failed to configure, and reverted changes as per usual.

    Anything else I can try?

  • Ok, unless you use a Webcam you don't really need this update.

  • Hi Andre,

I have been having exactly the same problem as Aileen. I have not managed to successfully configure my Windows 7 for 3 months. Everything downloaded and installed absolutely fine. But when it came to configuring the updates it failed. No reasons given. I have tried to study the CBS.log file as you have suggested above but I can't make out which particular file(s) I should exclude. Please would you be so kind as to help me? Thanks in advance.

  • Try this: click start and type msconfig and enter.

    Then click msconfig.exe

Under the general tab click : selective start

then click Hide all services (bottom left corner)

    then disable all if allowed

    click Ok and restart

Open all programs and find Windows update on the list

open it install updates and restart. Open the start menu again, type msconfig, msconfig.exe, then under general click Normal start, Ok and restart

    Problem should be solved
