Windows 8 desktop won't load

    Question

  • Hi Guys, Just wondering if anyone else has seen this. Windows 8 boots ok. Logs in ok and start screen displays ok. I can run apps from the start screen without any problems. If however, I launch the desktop, it's blank. No icons, no wallpaper and nothing at all on the task band. Right click on the 'start button' I can access the usual stuff. Set command within cmd shows that the path to the desktop is correct Looking in resource manager shows that explorer is waiting on a service (WCT) but I can only get a pid for svchost. Has anyone seen the sort of thing before? Does anyone have any quick solution? This is the home desktop that the wife and kids have access to and there is a growing amount of decent in the ranks. If I am unable to resolve this soon, I'm going to wipe and rebuild. Cheers, Jay...

The facts that you have a Taskbar and can raise the Start button and can right-click on it proves that explorer.exe is doing something.   So maybe that thing you caught it doing using RM is not significant.

Check to see if explorer.exe is running Elevated.   You can use  Resource Monitor.   Or just assume that it is, kill it with Task Manager and then restart it so that it is not Elevated.

    Good luck

  • 1. Is there any trace in Event log?

    2. Is this new or recurrent phenomenon? What did you do before it happens?

    3. Try consistency check with sfc /scannow

    4. If nothing helps give a try to refresh http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-8/restore-refresh-reset-pc

  • I have been experiencing the same problem. The answers you recieved don't make much sense to me (I'm pretty computer illiterate). Can someone explain how I can fix this problem in easier terms?
