Windows 7 deployment install.wim

    Question

  • Hi,

I have two wim files which I have build and captured.  I have an automated autounattend.xml that  works fine from USB. So I can deploy my image using usb fine.

Now I want to test the second install.wim. (different model computer) now i deploy this using th exact same autounattend.xml and it crashed half way through.  This is not the wim file as it works find in SCCM

Why would the seconf usb install fail.  I also tried this thrid (captured install.wim) and it crashed out during install

    What could be wrong ?

  • The catalog file only is used by WSIM to verify what options are available in the image, and it uses it for validation purposes. It is only used on the technician computer.

In order to determine why the other image does not work, you will need to post what error you are getting, or what exactly you mean by "Crashing"

  • Are you using WSIM to validate the unattend versus the other wim?

  • Hi,

I dont know whatyou mean by WISM VALIDATION", I juts used WISM to create my answer file! When I got this working it worked perfect.  So when I use a different wim file it fails.  Do I have to create a new catalogue ?

How does my autounattend distingush between once install.wim and and anther install.wim file ? and why ?

  • Yes the catalog will probably be slightly different on a different WIM.  Particularly if its a different architecture, different patching level, different sku etc.

  • Thanks for the reply, but the Catalog is stored where,?  not on usb but on the computer that has WISM

In relation to the SKU, Patching etc,  Whats that got to do with the autounattend.xml ?

Anyway, Can I deply different wim images by updating the wim file in the soruce folder.? and use the same autounattend.xml

Please explain what must be updated.

  • I will be fairly busy so I won't be able to help much today.  That being said here is some documentation on wsim that might give you a better understanding:

  • CAN ANYONE EXPLAIN WHY ONE INSTAL.WIM WORKS FINE USING AUTOUNATTEND.XML.

THEN I BUILD ANOTHER WIM FILE, AND TRY AND DEPLOY USING IDENTICAL AUTOUNATTEND.XML AND IT FAILS. WHY ?

BOTH WIM FILES WORK 100% USING SCCM OSD TS AND DEPLOY!

SO WHY DOES AN AUTOUNATTEND.XML INSTALL FAIL ON ONE WIM FILE AND NOT ANOTHER. NOTHING WRONG WITH WIM FILE

DO I NEED TO CREATE A NEW CATALOG WIM FILE FOR EACH INSTALL.WIM.  DOES THE CATALOGUE HAVE TO EXIST ON THE USB STICK ?
