Guest Account : cannot logon

    Question

  • Hi
Windows 7 Home Premium 32 bits
Accounts : Admin, User 1, User 2, Guest

I cannot logon to the Guest account anymore (it worked before).
Error message when I try to logon:
"The User Profile Services service failed to logon - User Profile cannot be loaded"

Does anybody know how to repair this please ?

    Thanks

  • Don't bother anymore.
I have reloaded a sytem image that did not have this error yet.
    Everything is fine again.
I do not understand what has disabled my Guest account as well as all new accounts that I created.

Thanks to everybody who tried to help me anyway.

  • Have you done a system restore yet?  That should fix it.  If you don't have any restore points, then there are other ways to go about fixing it. But let us know first if restore does the job for you.

  • Hi, thanks for answering my request for help so fast.

A system restore does not help.
I have even reloaded a system image of a couple of weeks ago and saw that the Guest Account was already broken at that time.

You said that there is a plan B ?
I think we gonna need it :-))

    Thanks on beforehand

    Hi Picsoe

Try creating another Guest account to see if the same behavior is recreated.

If this new Guest account works OK, it indicates that the first Guest account may be corrupted.

    Let us know.

Thank You for using Windows 7

  • Hi,

I am not allowed to create a Guest Account because there is already a user on my system with that name.

  • Well then create a Guest account named guest1.

  • I did that in the meantime.
But I cannot logon to it either - the same error message appears

  • look at the keys under HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentUser\ProfileList\ and see if you are able to find the key for Guest id SID. Does the key had a ".bak" appended to it and is there an identical one that was set to a temp directory. Renamed the other key, removed the ".bak" from the other and change the State property under Guest key to 0.

Please make a backup of your registry

Here's Microsoft KB article on that problem too http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947215

  • Hi,

    I looked into HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentUser\ProfileList\

There are no keys with a .bak appended to it.

I see 3 keys in the registry:
    - The administrator
    - User 1
    - User 2
They all work fine - I can logon to them

There is no Guest account in the registry list however
The new account that I created half an hour ago does not appear in the registry list either

When I boot Windows I can see 5 users on the login screen now :
    - Administrator - works OK
    - User 1 - Works OK
    - User 2 - Works OK
    - Guest - Does not work - does not appear in the registry
    - The newly created user - Does not work - does not appear in the registry
