XP Windows Security Warning - Cannot turn on Automatic Updates

    Question

  •

I have scanned my laptop for viruses, trojans and whatnot. It is clean (after a few little things that popped up, they were fixed by Panda Virus, Avast, and by some online scanning places too. I used to have Mcafee installed but I found it didn't protect me from some things after all. Anyway, it is a new install, I reformed the hard drive, reinstalled XP, updated it up to the yee yang....so now I get this little red shield at the bottom of my screen stating that Automatic Updates are off, and when I go to automatic updates it says it is on, and if I try to turn it on via the red sheild it says it cannot. Is there a good fix for this. I see alot of people have this problem, but I want it fixed. Please help.

  • The symptoms you describe are those of a virus/trojan attack which has not been fully removed.  You should take your enquiry to a forum which specialises in repairs after a virus attack, as we do not have that expertise on this forum.  This forum is intended for issues arising specifically from the installation of Service Pack 3.
