Will not install wireless mouse and keyboard since changing to Windows 8

    Question

  • Hi, first post and unfortunately I need help. Installed Windows 8 two days ago and apart from having to delete iTunes everything went fine with the install taking less than an hour. I got the new start page and went to click on something only to find my wireless mouse was not working and then I found that the keyboard was not working either. I plugged in a cable USB mouse and it worked immediately but I do not have a cabled keyboard. I went to control panel and then windows update where there was one upgrade for my Microsoft 700 keyboard and mouse, only 28kb though ?? There was also four other updates so I clicked to install them. The progress bar got to about 75% then I was informed that the updates failed and the system was uninstalling the updates. I tried them one at a time as well but they all fail ? Next step I went to keyboard where there was no driver installed, clicked on search for driver which it found but failed to install, again. I then went to device manager and no keyboard but there was an unknown device with a yellow triangle on it, I searched yo upgrade the driver but again it failed. I have searched everywhere and this appears to be common but I could not fund any easy fix. It seems strange why a Microsoft keyboard and mouse will not work on a Microsoft operating system. Can anyone help with this in a not to technical way. It is doing my head in now as everything worked fine on Windows 7 prof. The keyboard and mouse are plugged in using a USB for the wireless sender which is not lit up at any time. Naturally with no keyboard I cannot type in anything at all so am having to use the cable mouse to go anything. Thanks for any help and advice.

  • Hi, I'd first try unplugging the receiver USB from your PC and connect it into a different USB port - I find that often prods Windows into re-detecting and re-asserting things.

The "manual" for your device seems to be here: http://www.microsoft.com/hardware/en-us/d/wireless-optical-desktop-700 and there are some technical support phone numbers listed at the end of the document.

edit: I just found this, it may help you: http://www.microsoft.com/hardware/en-us/downloads/mouse-keyboard-center

  • Thanks Don for the advice. I did download the mouse and keyboard centre and it did find the keyboard and mouse but again it would not fully install them, gets to about 75% or so then just stops, I even left it for hours but it did not complete. As I cannot type anything in I am having to click on websites and cut and paste the search terms to try and get something to work. It seems ridiculous that Microsoft would release an operating system that will not work with Microsoft products. Apart from buying a wired keyboard I do not have a clue why this or any normal Microsoft updates will not work. I have read about many others having this problem but nothing mentions any fixes and why does all the updates fail even if I try to install them one at a time.
