the dependency service or group failed to start

    Domanda

  •

my vista ultimate system has no network connectivity.  the connection status in 'unknown' and the event log service is not running.  the hard disk has less than 10% capacity left.  the network center says 'the dependency service or group failed to start'

there is no restore capability and the last panda antivirus update was two days ago when the network capability was lost.  virus scans are clean.

it looks as if a number of services are not running.

    help please

  • Hi LachlanRobertson,

Regarding the 6to4 issue, please refer to the following Microsoft Knowledge Base:

On a Windows Vista-based computer or on a Windows Server 2008-based computer, the Microsoft ISATAP adapter appears with a yellow exclamation mark next to it in Device Manager, and you also receive an error message

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/932520/en-us

Regarding the services error, as SFC cannot fix the errors, I suggest you perform an In-place Upgrade Installation to fix it.

    For your reference:

    In-place Upgrade Installation

    ===============================

Technically, you won’t lose any data to take an In-place Upgrade Installation. In order to avoid any unexpected problem. I suggest you backup your data before taking In-place Upgrade Installation.

    1. Start the computer by using the current Operating System.

    2. Insert the Windows Vista DVD in the computer's DVD drive.

    3. Use one of the following procedures, as appropriate:

If Windows automatically detects the DVD, the Install now screen appears.

    Click Install now.

If Windows does not automatically detect the DVD, follow these steps:

    a. Click Start, click Run, type Drive:\setup.exe, and then click OK.

Note Drive is the drive letter of the computer's DVD drive.

    b. Click Install now.

    4. When you reach the "Which type of installation do you want?" screen, click Upgrade to upgrade the current operating system to Windows Vista.

    Hope it helps.

  • Hi,

According to your description, this issue may be caused by Windows Vista system files are corrupted.

Do you have system restore backup point? If you have, I suggest you restore the system to a early backup point to resolve this issue.

If you do not have, please try to use System File Checker to scan system files to troubleshoot this issue.

Use the System File Checker (SFC) to scan system files

    =====================================================

The System File Checker tool enable an administrator to scan all protected files to verify their versions. To do so, follow these steps:

    1. Click "Start", type "CMD" (without quotation marks) in the "Start Search" box. Right click on the "CMD.exe" file, choose "Run as Administrator"

    2. Copy and paste "SFC /Scannow" (without quotation marks) in the "Open" box, and click "OK".

Note: There is a SPACE between "SFC" and "/Scannow", this command will take several minutes to complete and may require access to the Windows installation source files.

    Hope it helps.

  • Hi there, I'm having this exact problem and I also have Panda Anti-Virus (and updated it around the same time as OP).  I'm running the SCF\scannow command at this moment -   It came up with no problems 'did not find any integritiy violations'

Really don't understand this problem, it seems to have ruined access to windows.  I can not view recently installed updates

By the way, if I go into Device Manager then under Network Adapters I have my

    Broadcom Netlink - Working

    Intel PRO/Wireless - Working

    Microsoft 6to4 Adapter #3

    Microsoft 6to4 Adapter #7

    Microsoft 6to4 Adapter #8

For all the 6to4 items the device status is that it is not working properly, windows can not locate the drivers required for this device (code 31)

I have tried disabling and enabling these items to no avail.

UI have also tried this method

    1. Go to Start > Run > cmd

    2. Copy/paste the following line and hit your Enter key:

    Net localgroup Administrators localservice /add

    3. Reboot your computer.

Still researching the problem, taking ages.  Hope you can guys can help Smile

  • There is no restore option.  It also isn't working.

SFC  /scannow runs and finds nothing.

Nothing can be reported to Microsoft because there is no connectivity.

I see no recourse but to re-install Vista.

  • I gave up and reinstalled vista.  This laptop was connected to a Broadcom D-Link.  An identical laptop is connected via Actiontec and has no problems though the antivirus and operating system and applications are otherwise the same.

  • Hi Intrass,

Please understand that Windows Vista won’t damage system files itself.

Normally, system files corrupted caused by the following factors:

    1.Abnormal shutdown.

    2.Computer virus/Trojan.

3.Program which is not certified for Windows Vista.

I have the following suggestions for you:

1.Please check compatibility before installing a hardware or software on your computer. Microsoft released a website for it: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/compatibility/

2.Keep update Windows by Windows Update or Microsoft Update.

3.Do not run unknown program on the computer.

    Thanks.

  • Thank you, i'll try both of those solutions tonight.   Although I do not think a have Vista CD, is there anyway to get one without being charged?

  • Thanks for the suggestions.  I know about them all and practice them.  However, this laptop was used by a guy in the company who may not have followed them all all of the time.  Of course he says he did nothing and Vista all of a sudden just couldn't connect.

A big problem here is that no report can even be sent to Microsoft which means that they cannot work on a fix and it will happen again, and again.

I've reinstalled and created an iso backup on a separate drive.

  • I'm having the same problem. I can connect to the internet, but it's impossible to know the strength of the signal or anything else, which is very irritating.

I tried the scannow suggestion and it did detect corrupt files, only it wasn't able to fix them.

it said that the details are in the log under C:\Windows\Logs\CBS but when I tried to open the file, it says access denied, even though I'm an administrator.

I have no idea where to go from here.

Also, I'm not sure if this is connected or relavent but when I start up my computer it comes up with an error saying that it couldn't do something with sprtcmd.ese in the libeay32.dll directory.

I've updated TrendMicro and done a full system scan and it hasn't fixed the problem.

Any help would be very much appreciated!

  • I am having the exact same problem with a desktop and a laptop occurring a t the same time!, The scannow detected corrupted files and HP told me I need to do a complete recovery of the operating systems.  This is horrible! This started when I loaded up Vista SP1 on both computers.  I loaded up SP1 because ironically, i was having trouble networking the computers with thier stupid permissions that didn't work. This Vista system is so frustrating and useless that I'm considering going back to XP or buying an Apple!

  • Same problem here... started when I last updated Vista. Scan finds the corrupted files but can't fix them. Not sure where to go from here. I still have internet connectivity but the services have not started. Very frustrating... sounds as if one of the Vista updates has a side-effect.

If anyone knows how to fix this, please let me know.

  • I had the same issue and as it turns out, the issue is caused by a corruption in the TCP/IP Stack

To fix, you will need to run a command prompt as administrator

Start > All Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt (Right-Click and Run as Administrator)

At the command Prompt type : netsh winsock reset

Ignore all errors, restart and voila'

You made my 2 days and 2 nights with this answer.
I tried many other different things but to no avail.

Last night I taught I will try your suggestion and that will be the last thing I will try before I contact manufacturer of my lap top and ask for help or Vista installation cd to try to reinstall OS from scratch or repair. And there it was. When I did what you suggested by miracle it worked....

Thanks very much you are a star.

had this problem at one point also with a friends computer, This is the solution I found.

    1. Go to Run
    2. Type "msconfig", press "OK"
    3. Under General in the System Configuration ensure "Normal Startup" is checked and reboot.

This rectified the problem I was having as "Selective Startup" was checked, hope this helps.
I'll say a prayer for all vista users out there, I feel your pain.

  • I had this exact problem. It started after I upgraded my Vista Business laptop to SP1. I resolved it by re-installing but think my story might help.

I setp 2 laptops. Both Dell. One is a D620 one is a E4300. Both have 4gig's or RAM.

THe D620 setup perfectly with no issues. It ran updates all the way to SP2 with no issues is working great. It's about 2 years old.

The E4300 went fine until it got to SP1 which is when I started getting the Red X over the network settings even though I was on internet and VPN fine. I had issues trying to setup a modem with contact dll errors. After a day of trying all the help in this thread and other places I gave up and went to bed. In the middle of the night I realised the difference!

The D620 had run the INITIAL Vista setup with the network cable plugged in but the E4300 had run it without the cable plugged in.
The D620 had run through all the updates with downloads of up to 50mb.
The E4300 had run most of the updates with downloads of over 200mb.

I re-installed the E4300 from the inital install with the network plugged in and it ran completely smoothly. It's 100% now. Patched all the way to SP2.

So it's something to do with the initial install being able to get to the internet for lastest drivers or patches or updates or something DURING the install.

    Hope it helps.

    domenica 27 dicembre 2009 21:41
  • OK, here is another fix for the problem for those people who have tried the above methods but failed.

Access the 'Services' under Computer Management (right click My Computer - Properties - Manage - Services & applications - Services)

In the right hand pane, scroll down to the service 'Network Location Awareness'

If this service is showing DISABLED or STOPPED, then you need to restart it as your ability to see & interact with your network properly relies on this service.

Double click on the service to access the options for it.  If it is DISABLED, then from the STARTUP TYPE drop down menu, you need to select MANUAL and then APPLY the setting  (do not yet try to change the STARTUP TYPE to AUTOMATIC)

Now you are ready to RESTART the service by pressing the START button and then APPLY.

Once the service has restarted, you can then progress the STARTUP TYPE selection from MANUAL to AUTOMATIC, then APPLY the setting.

I also found I had to do the same thing for the service 'Diagnostic Policy Service'.  If you find yours is DISABLED, then apply the above steps.
    '
This should now have fixed the error.  Not sure if this has previously been explained elsewhere or this fix is somehow doing what the above methods are doing but simply in another fashion.  I simply worked through the problem myself and then came across this thread after I resolved my problem.

    Cheers Peeps.

  • About the problem: Dependency service or group failed to start

To solve this, you can check the service COM+ Event System . If this service is disable or stop, we cannot start any other services, and we often see the problem above.

If after starting that service, the problem appears again, you can find the other way.

    Good luck to all.

  • I have been reading in and out of forums for the last few days trying to figure this problem. Here is my quick story, i do not have any of the virus control center installed like some people are determining the problem is related to. I simply turned my laptop on the other night and my internet icon had the red X on it saying this error message also my firewall was turned off and unable to reactivate it? I tried everything I was able to find on posts from reinstalling a nla...dll file under system32, sfc /scannow, netsh commands, going into repair and trying to force start needed services all returning error messages on the stopped ones not allowing me to start them regardless. All of those failed to fix my problem. I attempted contacting Asus Tech Support and they said somone would call me in 24-48 hours to address my issue. I'm a little upset about wasting all this time and would like to get it fixed. Please, anyone out there able to help me out?

  • Same problem on Dell XPS.

COM + Event System is started

But the other mentioned services will not allow me to start them.  When I try to start the "Network Location Awareness" service, it gives Error 1068: The dependency service or group failed to start.

Of course Dell suggested it would be fantastical and easiest on everyone if I would just reinstall windows.  I hope they never go into medicine.

  • Code 31

This device is not working properly because Windows cannot load the drivers required for this device. (Code 31)
    Recommended resolution

    Update the driver

You may be prompted to provide the path of the driver. Windows may have the driver built-in, or may still have the driver files installed from the last time that you set up the device. However, sometimes, it will open the New Hardware Wizard which may ask for the driver. If you are asked for the driver and you do not have it, you can try to download the latest driver from the hardware vendor’s Web site.

In the device Properties dialog box, click the Driver tab, and then click Update Driver to start the Hardware Update Wizard. Follow the instructions to update the driver.

  • "The dependency service or group failed to start"-Windows7

"The dependency service or group failed to start" -Windows 7
I get the above msg in "Network nd sharing center" in Windows7, so i couldnt connect to the net either through Lan or Wifi. When i go for troubleshooting option its says problem found:"The diagnostic policy service is not running" , when i tried to start it manually from services.msc i get another error:"Windows could not start the Diagnostic Policy Service on Local Computer; Error 5: Access is denied".
I googled to find a solution for this problem. I referred the following sites

    2.http://social.answers.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/vistanetworking/thread/a2cf9717-6c0d-47d9-ae2f-ee0263a5f880

I had followed the steps given in those sites: "It is possible the permissions on a specific registry key was altered. You can try correcting this by going to Start, type regedit in the command prompt, right click the regedit program and select Run as Administrator. In the Registry Editor click the arrow to expand the selection, go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, SYSTEM, CurrentControlSet, Services, DPS, right click Parameters and choose Permissions. On the Permissions screen, select the TrustedInstaller user. If you do not see the TrustedInstaller user, click Add, type NT Service\TrustedInstaller and press OK. Ensure that the Full Control and Read permissions are checked for the TrustedInstaller user".

But even after doing all that the problem persists i.e "The dependency service or group failed to start" nd "Windows could not start the Diagnostic Policy Service on Local Computer; Error 5: Access is denied" when tried to start the service manually.
    I tried the following options:
    1. sfc /scannow
    2. Reset TCP/IP stack to installation defaults, type: netsh int ip reset reset.log
    3. Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults, type: netsh winsock reset catalog
    4. msconfig->"normal startup"
    5. uninstalled all network devices nd restarted
Inspite of trying all the above options, the problem still persists.
Please help me out. Thnx in advance.

    4. msconfig->"normal startup"
    5. uninstalled all network devices nd restarted
Inspite of trying all the above options, the problem still persists.
Please help me out. Thnx in advance.
Thanks Amar I used number 3 option and that worked.

  • This is the best and simplest solution I have ever found over the internet. So many people guarantee that their solution will work but it never does. In this case it works like a treat!

I wish I had visited this forum earlier and it would have saved me a few hours.

    Thank you Louis Vella!

Guy with a Gun...  Thank you very much.  This helped towards solving my issue.  I was having an issue with connectivity, and had tried so many things I had seen on posts in different forums.  I checked the services that you listed here and the settings were correct. However, this is what worked for me:

    Right Click My Computer

    Click Manage

    Double Click Services

    Open Network Location Awareness Properties

    Click Dependencies Tab

I then checked to see if all of the services listed in this tab were running, and of course one was disabled! I enabled it and made it automatic, then I was able to start up the Network Location Awareness Service!  Hope this helps others!

  • Guys, really... I tried all of the things above this but the only one that worked was...

Control Panel -> Backup/Restore -> Restore -> *not* cry because there seemingly are no backups -> click the System Restore link below that -> I chose the checkpoint from three days ago when Windows Update ran -> (made sure the power was plugged in) and then told it to go

It ran through its paces, rebooted, did some things, rebooted again and now it's happy.

Earlier, I had reviewed the updates that were installed and the last time something was applied was last month.  The Kaspersky Internet Security 2010 software's logs suggested that four trojans were found on the laptop two days ago.  So either the Windows update included some Java-based trojans or the client downloaded something two days ago (unlikely since nothing shows up in the installed programs with this date).

Anyway, good luck to you.  I know how frustrating all this can be.

  • The netsh trick worked for me as well. The funny thing is that most of the "certified" Microsoft experts on here are the last ones to know what the heck to do. I have found that the majority of their advice never works. Amazing.

  • I have been struggling with this for 3 hours now.. I have run through all the netsh commands and the uninstalling fo the network devices the SFC /scannow etc etc etc... NONE of them worked.. or at least they didnt completely solve hte problem.. I have no doubt that they helped get me towrads the solution.

My services wouldnt start no matter what I tried... until i ran the below commands from a command prompt with admin rights.

    net localgroup administrators localservice /add
    net localgroup administrators networkservice /add

    Hope this helps some people
