  • Windows 7 PRO, Lenovo X220, Outlook 2010. Problem with multiple external Harddrives. 

    Just rolled out a new laptop to one of our users. they had an older lenovo thinkpad. So they try to run a windows backup of specific files/folders - we excluded all system file/folders. The backup keeps failing trying to backup the .pst file (1.7GB) - it has not problems backing up the other 58GB's of data including an outlook .OST file (11GB) in the same folder as the .pst. 

    We tried w/ outlook closed (confirmed process was not running) but have the same problem. 

    First thing I did was update the machine(lenovo drivers) and then installed the driver specific from the EXT HD vendor(s) - but this did not change the results. 

    On the laptop I ran Error checking on the system drive and no errors were found. 

    Backup encountered a problem while backing up file C:\Users\%username%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Outlook\Outlook.pst. Error:(The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error. (0x8007045D))

    Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks

  • If it consistently fails on the same Outlook profile you might want to exclude it from backup just to tesk.  If you dont get the I/O obviously its something odd with he profile.

    Is it only on that one machine?

    How about moving the PST file to other location for a test?

    Please run chkdsk /R C: command. If the issue persists, you can shrink or extend the volume by several megabytes to move the last cluster of the volume to a different area. Then,  run chkdsk again to check the result.

  • I must admit I am stumped. Still not sure if the issue was the .pst file (if it is the problem, why the I/O error?) or the disk. So I moved the .pst file to another location on the disk and still got the I/O error during backup at the new location. 

    I then tried to run a PST repair and it failed, I tried an export PST to rebuild and it did export 90% but then failed. So basically I think the issue lies with the .pst. I noticed that windows backup will takes chunks of large files (1.7GB.PST) and create smaller incremented zip files. So possible it gets the the corrupt part of the .pst and can no longer grab it and just fails w/ I/O because it cannot differentiate the ability to read being the fault of the .pst vs. the disk itself?
