Windows 7 client DNS Issue

    Întrebare

  • First of all, Id like to say that I ve posted the issue in the windows 7 forum, and I was prompted to to make a post to Network Infrastructure Servers.

I have about 80 Windows (both Windows 7 and XP)  clients under 2 domain controllers (One primary and One secondary). Both Domain Controllers hold the same DNS Forward Lookup Zone for availability reasons. The 2 DC are placed in different places in the same city, having a 3 mbit connection (Leased Line) between them. After performing Windows Updates on the Win 7 Clients, 2 specific Clients are deleted from the dns zone, without a specific reason, while they are working, causing application problems. In order to solve the issue I have to ipconfig/register dns or reboot the client machine. This command solves the problem temporarily but the event happens again, sometimes  after couple of minutes , sometimes after some days. I don’t have Sites configured. I don’t use Aging or scavenging. I have many other windows 7 clients that don’t face this problem at all. Both DCs are Windows 2008 Server R2 updated with all  Microsoft updates until Nov 2011. Sorry for my English.

  • Hello everyone,

after a couple of months, i found out the cause of the event. Actually, when the terminal is geting to power saving mode, is stoping all netwotk activity. When it comes back from power saving mode, the terminal does not have enough time to start network service, during this delay, gpupdate fails, time sync fails, and DNS update fails. Finally RPC service stops, and the clients needs reboot for the service to start.

The solution.... Disable power saving mode. Thank you all for your answers

  • Check you dhcp settings.

enable " Always dynamically update DNS A and PTR records"

    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc787034(v=ws.10).aspx

    23 februarie 2012 19:42
  • I forgot to mention that I don't use DHCP at all, because of application and network (lots of subnets)  issues.  All clients use static addresses.

    24 februarie 2012 06:05
  • It could be Active Directory replication problem where the record got marked for deletion on one of the servers.

Check the event viewer on the domain controller there must be something registered for that.

Static records usually don't get removed from DNS with scavanging.

You could have same IP address assigned to 2 or more clients, check for duplicate ip addresses in DNS console.

    24 februarie 2012 07:21
  • There are is not any ip assigned to 2 computers. I checked Event viewer but did not find anything, both client and server. But I haven't d o u bl e cheched it. I ll check it by tuesday. I think that finally, I will have to disjoin both clients from domain and re join them back.
    24 februarie 2012 17:45
  • create "A" record manually in DNS and set the security that only you can delete it.

  • Hi,

If the issue persists after creating A record, I suggest posting in Server Forum below to check the issue from server side.

  • I believe I found the link to your other thread. THis way, we can review what was discussed, to avoid duplicating our efforts. Tiger, if you are monitoring this thread, can you merge these two threads together? Thank you!

    .

Based on what I've read in your other thread, this is highly suspected of possibly being a duplicate AD integrated zone issue. The symptoms appear that way, such as magically disappearing records. There are other causes for records to disappear, too, but there is a 75% chance this may be the case. To elimimate this as the possible cause, please review and follow the procedure on how to use ADSI Edit to find any zone references that begin with "InProgress...." or CNF..."  Check all three partitions (the blog shows you how). If you find any, delete them.

    Hi xristod,

    Thanks for posting here.

Was there any event also been recorded on these two clients?

I’d suggest to enable the auditing feature in order to a further investigation and troubleshooting:

    Tracking DNS Record Deletion

  • I don' t think that this is a server issue because other clients exist in the same zone, same subnet, same OU and same policy. I found that windows log an Event id 1014 after hibernation which says that the client could find none of the DNS servers. The question here is WHY the client deletes himself from DNS server and why other clients don't. I don't want "automatic deletion". I preffer doing it by hand. None of the other clients have this behavior. i have only one single zone.

    thanks in advance

  • I assume no duplicate zones exist?

    .

    See if this helps:

    ===================================

As far as falling aleep or hibernation depends on the client operating system and service pack level. Are these Vista machines? The later Vista service packs fix this issue.

  • If there was a duplicate zone,  I would have problems with all clients.  I don’t use DHCP. I d like to describe again all the steps:

    1) Forward lookup zone record: Hostname (Ahost) -> IP Address (The client is powered off)

    2) DNS Server does not delete any record automatically

    3) The client boots and updates the record (changes timestamp of record)

    4) The client Hibernates (as scheduled by power  policy) and after the end of hibernation  a DNS Client records a 1014 Event.

    5) The record disappears from the DNS completely!!!

    6) Only 2 clients face this problem.

    7) There are 6 clients in this subnet, sharing the same switch, same OU, same Group policy, same power options and static addresses. Only 2 of them face this problem.

    8) I’m thinking installing windows again!

  • Are you using imaging for your desktops? If so, were they Sysprepped?

Are they all desktops, or laptops with a wireless interface also awakening?

    .

If the links and info I've provided on how Vista and newer operating systems work after a reboot or come up after being asleep don't help, I've also heard of this occuring with a specific switch port settings, depending on the type of switch, such as the "Spanning Tree Portfast" not being enabled. Read the following for more info:
    http://eventid.net/display-eventid-1014-source-DNS%20Client%20Events-eventno-10623-phase-1.htm

Also, how is the NIC hardware properties set?
