Issues if we remove GC role

    Dotaz

  • Could you please advice me issues if I remove GC role from any of the DC because that DC has both roles Infrastructure Master and Global Catalog

All DC's are holding GC role except one DC. So I am plannning to transfer Infrastructure Role to the one which is not GC and planning to

If you remove GC then clients, Exchange and manually configured application clients will lose connectivity to GC. The implications are on DC load at the site and applications that don't use DC Locator for locating GC and don't retry.

In your situation it is much better to make all DCs Global Catalog - just one checkox to tick! If all domain controllers are also global catalogs, placement of infrastructure master doesn't matter. It also doesn't matter if your forest consists of single domain. • IM doesn't do play any role in the single domain environment.IM should not be placed on the GC is only required when you have multiple domain forest.

If a single domain forest, you can have all DCs a GC. If multiple domains, it is recommended for a GC to not be on the FSMO IM Role, unless you make all DCs GCs"

You should also configure all the domain controller as a Global Catalog servers. This will NOT place additional stress on the DCs, while allowing GC-related applications (such as Exchange Server) to easily perform GC queries.

  • Is your environment is single forest/domain or multiple domain? If its single domain then there is no issue in keeping all the FSMO role together on one of the DC and if its multiple domain then only you need to be concerned of but if there are multiple GC then GC and IM can be kept together on one DC in multiple domain forest environment. You can understand in better way by referencing below links.

    Question

If I have only one domain in my forest, do I need a Global Catalog? Plenty of documents imply this is the case.

  • Hello,

do you run a single domain forest, then there is no problem, it is either recommended to make all DCs GC server. For more details see the already mentioned articles.

  • As has been pointed out by others, you can make ALL the DC's, GC's in a single domain forest.  The Infrastructure Master's (IM) role in a forest is to provide additional details about objects between domains via the GUID, sid and its DN.  Since you make it appear that you have a single domain within your forest, the IM provides no purpose and as such can be placed on any DC.
