Hyper V network implementation

    Frage

  • Hardware Dell 2950

Roles DC, File server, Application server, Terminal Server, Exchange server

All these in one host machine by creating three VMs 1. for DC 2. File server, Application, Terminal server 3. Exchange server

Does dell support these VMs, is there any compatibility issues/performance issues

  • Hi,

For the Hyper-V host machine, it depends on your requirements and budget. It is recommended that you contact Dell to perform the further research.

By the way, if you want to set up a production environment, some prerequisite need to be done.

    1. As best practice, it is recommended that you locate critical server roles on domain controllers that are installed directly on physical hardware. These include Global Catalog servers, Domain Name System (DNS) servers, Flexible Single Master Operations (FSMO) roles and replication bridgeheads.
    2. If you don’t want to have a Hyper-V Failover Cluster, you may need to configure a RAID on the Hyper-V host machine. It there is enough budget, buy a SAN and create a Hyper-V Failover Cluster.
    3. You can use dedicate External Virtual Network for different virtual machines, you can also team the network adapters.

  • Hi,

Check your processor to support virtualization technology, then disable execution bit to install hyper-v.
Try to check the last version of the network card driver and update your bios version if it's possible

  • Thanks for your reply.

For accomodating the above server roles in three different VMs, can you suggest a host machine from dell.

  • Dell 2950 will support server virtualization. If you are sizing the hardware properly you can host these three VM on this server.

  • Thanks Sajeed,

Also regarding the licensing of windows server with hyper v, we can install 4 virtual machine with one Enterprise edition as a host. Is there any licensing issues while adding roles in host machine.

There  is one host machine and three virtual machine inside that, the host machine is holding roles like AD, DNS, DHCP the virtual machines consists of exchange, terminal and apps server, file and print server

The host box is 2950 dell with two network adapter

Suggest how to network these virtual machine, exchange and termimal apps should have external access

Shall i go ahead with assigning the virtual adapter to all these three vm where the virtual adapter is bound to one network adapter for external access.

How to assign the network adapters and assign ip to virtual machines to properly communicate with users as well as with external network
