Windows Server OEM License

    Question

  • Hi

I have two Dell poweredge 2950 with Windows 2003 Ent Server x64 25 Clt OEM Software on each server.

And I want to use both server one for domain controller and one for database server and I choose to use  per seat/per user License.

Can I combine both license on the Lincensing purchase history so I will have 50 device able to connect to both server?

    thanks in advance

  • Hi Bagyo,

I just called the Microsoft licensing desk at Ingram and was told the OEM copy of Windows stays with the hardware you purchased, however the CALs are not tied specifically to that hardware.  So if you have purchased 2 servers, both which came with 5 user CALs, you have 10 user CALs for the environment.

    Hope this helps.

  • Hi Bagyo,

As long as you have a valid license to cover all your employees or devices (Per User, or Per Device) then you are in compliance with Microsoft.

For example, lets say you have 20 servers, and 100 employees.  As long as you purchase 100 Per User CALs, they are authorized to access all 20 servers.

Here is some additional information on per user and per device CALS: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb693539.aspx

    Hope this helps.

  • Hi Nick,

    Thank for your answer.

so that mean I can have total 50 Cal from 2 server with OEM win 2003 Server. What make me not sure is because the lincense is OEM so I dont purchace CAL separately,  it come with the machine and not transferable to other machine.
