Remote Desktop icons missing on Windows 8 Pro

    Question

  • We have Remote Desktop Services installed on a Windows 2008 R2 server, and the icons for Remote Desktop display fine on the web page for Windows 7 clients, but they are missing for Windows 8 Pro clients.  The text/description shows and you can still click to access the remote desktop, but the icon itself is not displayed.  Any ideas?

  • Hi,

    Thanks for your post.

You mean the icon disappear on the Remote Access Website for Windows 8 clients? Is this issue occurs on all Windows 8 Clients? What web browse you use to access the RD web site? Please try to delete the temporary cache of IE, and try again. Hope it helps.

    Best Regards,

  • Hi,

You still have the 'old' client available. windows key + R will open a 'run' box and there you can type MSTSC.

From there you can save a connection to have a shortcut on the legacy desktop.

For the start menu (Metro UI) you need to add Remote Desktop Services from the App store to have it displayed.

It will not be displayed on the menu by default anymore after installing Windows 8. (in the beta versions it was displayed on the start menu (Metro UI) by default.

  • BUMP!

We have the same issue.  From Windows 8, there is no picture for the icons on the RDwebaccess portal page, but the names that normally show below the icons are still there.  Clicking where the icon is supposed to be does launch the app.  If you turn on compatibility view in Windows 8 the icons will show.  We're hoping we don't have to tell every potential Windows 8 user to turn on compatibility view...

  • Just use a group policy to set compatibility mode.
