migrating domain controller from windows server 2003 to 2008

    Question

  • Dears,

we have 3 domain controllers with 2003 windows server , and exchange 2007

we will upgrade to windows server 2008 and i am testing it .

after upgrade one of the server to 2008 (which has the exchange tab in the properties of the user) , it gives me an error when I open the properties of any user like the following

the specific module could not be found

    facility: win32

    id: c007007e

Microsoft active directory - exchange extension

and the snap in will not load and give error

the replication between DC's is working fine , and I think the problem is from the exchange tab in the ADUC

how can I fix it , and if I have to remove the exchange tab , how can I remove it without affecting the exchange environment !!!!

    I appreciate your help

    Thanks and Best Regards,

  • Hi ramos,

Did you perform an in-place upgrade from Windows Server 2003 to 2008? If so, this issue might be caused by Maildsmx.dll file is not registered correctly.

To work around this issue, you may re-register the Maildsmx.dll file on the new Windows 2008 box or uninstall the Exchange System Management tools.

Register the Maildsmx.dll file. To do this, follow these steps:

    1.     Click Start, click Run, type cmd in the Open box, and then click OK.

    2.     Type cd\program files\exchsrvr\bin at the command prompt.

    3.     Type regsvr32 /i maildsmx.dll, and then press ENTER.

This command repopulates the Exchange display specifiers.

Note By default, the Maildsmx.dll file is installed in the \Program Files\Exchsrvr\Bin folder.

how can i unistall Exchange System Management tools only , is it as usual from add remove program in the domain controller and remove the microsoft exchange from there, or there is another way to do it ??
when I start to remove the microsoft exchange from domain controller it gives me a wizard to unistall but i can't choose to unistall Exchange System Management tools (only) , then it shows that it is deleting the forest preparation ...... , will this affect the exchange real production when i remove it from the real producation domain controller .
