  • Child domain shares the same Domain naming master & schema master role & it inherits namespace of parent domain. In child domain, you don't have Enterprise admin account, it exists in parent domain only for most of the configuration. trust between parent & child is Parent-child two way transitive trust.Like Parent is ABC.com, the child domain will be XYZ.ABC.com

If you don't want to inherit parent domain name, you use new tree in the forest like parent is ABC & you can have new tree as XYZ.com.Tree root domain have their own Enterprise admin group to manage their own AD. trust between Root & tree is Tree-Root two trust. Domain tree shares same SM & DNM role in the forest.http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310996

  • child domains in a forest all shares the same contiguous namespace e.g:

    • child.company.com, child2.company.com, grandchild.child2.company.com

where a new domain tree dosen't share a contiguous namespace, ex company2.com but still belongs to the same forest.

"Tree root domain have their own Enterprise admin group to manage their own AD"? I tought there could be only one EA peer forest? as they share the Schema and Configuration Naming Contexts

  • @ Christoffer - You are correct we have only on Enterprise Admin per forest.
