KMS Host Key and Windows 8 Enterprise

    Question

  • We've got a KMS server with a C-Channel KMS key. It's running on a Windows 2008 R2 SP1 server and is taking care of our KMS activation needs for Windows 7, Windows 2008 and Office 2010.

For Windows 8, I understand I need to install a hotfix ( http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2691586 ) on my KMS server and then run slmgr.vbs /ipk <KMS Host Key>. Do I need to obtain a new C-Channel KMS host key, for this last step,  from Volume Licensing to support  Windows 8 and Server 2012?

Answers

  • After some further reading and consulting with other server admins, it appears that the KMS key for Windows Server 2012 was what I needed to properly activate my KMS server. It activates Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows Server 2008 / 2012 and Office 2010.

  • Hello,

According to the below KB, seems KMS_C keys currently does not support Windows 8 clients or Windows Server 2012.

  • Hello,

This KB just says that KMS host on Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 can now allow enterprise licensing of Win8 and Windows Server 2012.

As of your original question "Do I need to obtain a new C-Channel KMS host key, for this last step,  from Volume Licensing to support  Windows 8 and Server 2012",  please consult the Microsoft licensing center.

  • Just confirming. We host KMS  on Server 2008 R2 (SP1) with the hotfix applied. We /ipx inserted our new Server 2012 volume key into KMS server. (Windows 8 key would not install on the Server). /dlv says we are now at VOLUME_KMS_2012_C channel and all our counts have been reset.

Will this KMS activate (or reactivate) our current Win7, Server 2008 R2, Office 2010 plus Windows 8 and Server 2012?

Do I need to /ato again after the new key is installed? Its been activating fine for a couple years.

    Thanks!

  • Hello,

Does the /dlv show the key as being licensed ( under license status)

Yes that key will activate all those Windows Editions. Changing the Windows Key should not affect the Office 2010 KMS key

  • Good catch Darrel. After the new key /dlv had status of grace period. After /ato we are at "Licensed" and I see all my counts. Thanks!
