Trouble running adprep /forestprep

    Question

  • Good Morning,

This may have been answered multiple times in this forum before and if so, I apologize.  I have 1 Windows 2000 x32 DC that is running on our internal network.  I just installed a new Windows Server 2008 x64 server to replace the existing Windows 2000 x32 DC.  I, of course, need to make the Windows Server 2008 x64 server a domain controller in order to eventually decommission the existing Windows 2000 x32 DC.

When I try to prepare the forest for the Windows Server 2008 x64 DC and run the following command on the Windows 2000 x32 DC C:\sources\adprep\adprep /forestprep I get this error at the command prompt:

    C:\sources\adprep>adprep /forestprep

Can anyone tell me how to resolve this problem so I can prepare the Windows 2000 x32 server forest and domain for the new Server 2008 x64 DC?  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Hi,

'schupgr.exe' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file.Adprep was unable to upgrade the schema on the schema master.

Generally speaking, the error "not recognized as an internal or external command" occurs when the system cannot find the specific executable. By default, if an executable in batch file is not using absolute path the system will use the “path” environmental variable to retrieve the system default paths and try to search the executable in the defined paths. You may perform the following steps to check the environmental variable:

    1. Go to Start > right click My Computer and go to Properties.
    2. Click advaned tab.
    3. Click Environment Variables.
    4. Check "path" and if it is set properly. By default, it is %SystemRoot%\system32;%SystemRoot%;%SystemRoot%\System32\Wbem.

    Hope this helps.

    Best wishes
