Outlook Access Denied Opening Jpg or Png

    Question

  • I have a terminal server (RDS) running Outlook 2003 (latest SP and patches) for an office of 20 people.
    It is running on Windows Server 2008 R2, latest patches installed. 

    When users receive mail that has an attachment of a photo, normally Jpg, or Png, and they try to view it we get an "access is denied" error shown below. If I try to save the file to their documents, and then open it we also get an error. 




    Error when opening from disk: "Windows cannot access the specified device, path or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item". 

    Again, only photos, like Jpg or Png. If a user gets a Word doc, PDF doc, it works fine. I tried editing permissions, no luck. All users have redirected folders through group policy. 

    Any help would be appreciated!

  • Two possibilities.

     

    1 image viewer is restricted.

    2 temporary folders are restricted, less likely due to the save to My Docs/desktop you attempted.

    Check whether domain users have permission on the folder Outlook Secure Temp Folder. Detailed information can be found in following third party article:

  • Hello

    Try installing the "Desktop Experience" feature. This allows the preview of these file and thus enabling this feature.

  • I can verify that the 980393 fix worked for us - but your problem may not be the same as ours. I can tell you that - as the kb article states: when using 2008 R2 server you can have only one instance of Photo Viewer open at any given time. The hotfix resolves that. And when the problem exists the errors you get are misleading in that they appear to be security related - see the kb article

  • Same Issue here. (Windows 2008 Server, Xenapp5, Outlook2003)

    Cant open JPG Files in Outlook2003 with Windows Picture Programm.

    When I use Explorer it works.The Hotfix isnt available for 2008 Server.

    Workaround doesnt work for us.

    Any idea?

  • After removing the folder the error message disappear, but keeps coming back after a month for either current user or another user. Any idea what is the cause? Our enviroment is running Windows Server 2008 with Office 2007 and Windows Server 2008 R2 with Office 2010. The hotfix didn't solved the problem and workaround doesn't work for us either.
