Thin clients rdp to windows Server 2012 Server

    Question

  • Hello

I have a customer with a Windows Server 2003 Server 32-bit serving as a DC & Mail Server, as well as doing nightly backups.

The users are running desktops as well as laptops in the office, with some of them connecting (sometimes) to the office network from remote locations.

I am currently looking at upgrading their environment, by upgrading the server to Windows 2012 64-bit, and add Thin Clients for the Desktop users so they can connect straight to the server which will help with reducing overheads (like HDD failure on the desktops).

The question that I have is whether this setup will work? Basically I am looking at either Windows Server 2012 Server Essentials, or Standard 64-bit with the necessary amount of RDP CAL's. This server will run exactly as the current 2003 server in that it will be the DC, Exchange server & perform nightly backups. On top of that I want to install MS Office with the required amount of licenses.
However I would like to know if this will work or whether I am looking at a catch that will prevent the users from connecting to the server? Or Office giving problems in that if Word is open for one user, it won't open for the another user (the same question with Outlook & Excel etc)?

If there is any potential problem that will prevent this setup from working, can someone please point out to me what the problem(s) will be and if there is a workaround?

    TIA

  • Its not advisable to have Domain controller and exchange on one server and secondly i would encourage you to implement the VDI soultion using the Windows 2012 through which you can achieve everything which is mentioned above.
