Unable to share a printer

    Question

  • I have windows 2008 R2 Enterprise server in cluster envionrment and I am trying to share a printer either installed either in virtual spooler or local and getting the error message as " Printer Settings could not be Saved. Operation could not be completed (error 0x000006d9). If I trun on the Windows firewall on the seerer I can share the printer and not the case when windows firewall is off.

    Any thoughts?

  • Well I did not find any issues with spooler to any cluster resources. It was purely windows was expecting Firewall to be on while sharing a printer.

I fixed this issue by adding the port exception in windows firewall and got my sharing working.

Still not sure why I was unable to share a printer while windows firewall was off.

    Cheers

  • Hello merwindz,

According to your description, I understand that you can not share a printer on Windows 2008 R2 Enterprise server in cluster environment.

To troubleshoot this issue, please perform the steps below:

    1.    Install Fix it http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2000007 to reset the print spooler.

    2.    Restart the "Server" service on the server.

    3.    Restart the "Printer Spooler" service on the server.

If the issue persists, please also try reinstall the printer on the server. To enable printer sharing, you can refer to:

    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb727037.aspx

    Note:

It's recommend that you do not disable Windows Firewall unless you replace it with a non-Microsoft firewall that provides equivalent functionality. Disabling the firewall can expose your computer to malicious traffic from the Internet. For more information, you can refer to: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee126090(WS.10).aspx

  • Hello,

I can not share the printer when the windows firewall is tuned off. Windows is expecting firewall to be on when sharing a printer. The solution doens't address my problem at all and moreover its not applies to Windows 2008 R2 Ent.

    Cheers

  • This is the error.  Can you share a folder?
    G:\>winerror 0x6d9
      1753 EPT_S_NOT_REGISTERED <--> 0xc0020036 EPT_NT_NOT_REGISTERED

Is the Print Server Role installed on your machine sharing the printer?

Be sure to install this KB if you are clustering the spooler resource
