How to change RemoteApp .rdp shortcut icon?

    Question

  • Is there any way to have customized icons for Remote App .rdp shortcuts? I have create the .rdp program but all the icons on them look like Remote Desktop Connection icons. This is not nice when you want to publish Microsoft Office programs.

Is there anyway to show Excel icon for a remote app published icon?

    Thanks

  • Don't create an RDP file when configuring the RemoteApp program. Rather create an MSI, it includes the app icon. You can deploy the MSI either manually or by group policy.

  • All good and well if you running 2008 but what about 2012 where you can not create MSI any more??

  • If you use the RemoteApp and Desktop Connection feature, you will notice that the installed start menu shortcuts use the icon of the actual app instead of the default mstsc.exe icon. The easiest thing would be to just use that feature and let it create the shortcuts for you.

If for some reason that is not possible (e.g. your clients are pre-Win7), then you'll have to do it the hard way. You can retrieve .ico files for all of your published apps from the RD Web Access server, if you know where to look. Take a look at https://<your RDWeb server>/RDWeb/Pages/WebFeed.aspx, and look for relative links to ICO files embedded in the XML. Download the ICO file that corresponds to your app onto the client machine, then modify your shortcut to use the icon from that file.

    Hope that helps,
