Is there a WinRM 3.0 for Windows Server 2008 available?

    Question

  • I was trying to add win2k8 & win2k8r2 server into Windows Server 2012 (RC) Server Manager.  It told me I have to install WinRM 3.0 service to these server.  Is there a WinRM 3.0 for Windows Server 2008 available?

    Thanks!

  • Hello,

There is no WinRM 3.0.   WinRM 2.0 is included in Windows Server 2008 (R2) by default and the service is started automatically.

Please ask here in the Windows Server 2012 Release Candidate (RC) General forum.

    Thanks

  • In Windows Server 2012, Server Manager relies on WinRM and the
Distributed Component Object Model (DCOM) for remote communications. The
settings that are controlled by the Configure Remote Management
dialog box only affect parts of Server Manager and Windows PowerShell
that use WinRM for remote communications. They do not affect parts of
Server Manager that use DCOM for remote communications. For example,
Server Manager uses WinRM to communicate with remote servers that are
running Windows Server 2012, but uses DCOM to communicate with servers
that are running Windows Server 2008 and Windows Server 2008 R2, but do
not have the Windows Management Framework 3.0
update applied. Microsoft Management Console (MMC) and other legacy
management tools use DCOM. For more information about how to change
these settings, see To configure MMC or other tool remote management over DCOM in this topic.

  • There is a pre-release version of WMF 3.0 for 2008 and 2008R2 that was posted on 5/31/12.  .NET 4 needs to be installed before the WMF install will proceed.

  • This is the RTM version of WMF 3.0   Posted on 9/4/2012 - Enjoy.

    WinRM
    With Windows Management Framework 3.0:
    • Connections are more robust
Remote connections communicating over WinRM are more robust to transient network failures such as a flaky WAN connection. In the case of a complete network failure, connections are gracefully disconnected and can be reconnected when network connectivity is restored.
    • Remoting is more Standards-compliant
Standard WS-Management operations, including Create and Delete, can be performed over WMI. Remoting for cmdlets written in native code using the new WMI provider development model uses WS-Management instead of DCOM.
    • Multiple PowerShell sessions can be shared in the same process
PowerShell sessions from the same user to the same session configuration (WinRM plug-in) can run in a single shared process instead of separate processes. This improves scalability and performance by allowing multiple sessions to share memory and other server resources.

  • Hello,

I just downloaded Windows6.1-KB2506143-x64.msu; and installed on 2 of my Windows Server 2008 R2 server.
    Rebooted the Win2K8 servers.

However, on my Windows Server 2012 Server Manager, these 2 Windows 2008 R2 servers are still showing:

"Online - Verify WinRM3.0 service is installed, running and required firewall ports are open"

Tried to "turn off" the firewall, still the same

When running PS command $PSVersionTable, I got
       Name                           Value
        ----                           -----
       WSManStackVersion              3.0
       PSCompatibleVersions           {1.0, 2.0, 3.0}
       SerializationVersion           1.1.0.1
       BuildVersion                   6.2.9200.16398
       PSVersion                      3.0
       CLRVersion                     4.0.30319.269
       PSRemotingProtocolVersion      2.2

    Any other suggestions?
    Much appreciated

    Thanks
    David
